Manchester Airport’s landmark project to reimagine one of the iconic chandeliers that featured in Terminal 1 when it opened in the 1960s is now the subject of a new documentary.

Over the last three years the airport has undertaken a project to take one of the old chandeliers and reimagine it to become a breathtaking art installation in its brand new, £1.5bn Terminal 2.

The final piece of art – titled Atmospheric Reflections of the North – now hangs in the new state-of-the-art security hall, welcoming passengers to the ‘super terminal’.

The 20-minute documentary was created in collaboration with OddFilms, a Wythenshawe based media company that is part of the Businesses in Wythenshawe (BW3) forum which the airport supports.

Using behind the scenes footage and interviews, the film highlights the various steps, challenges and emotions on the way to the project’s final installation in May 2026. This included the airport’s collaboration with Manchester School of Architecture students, the intricate methods used by leading artist Liam Hopkins of Lazerian, to deliver the project and the celebration as they were unveiled.

The documentary reveals the unique characteristics of the artwork, including the use of parachutes as a tribute to the airport having been a home to a parachute training facility in the Second World War and design details nodding to the flight paths planes use as they leave the airport.

Airport colleagues who have worked on the project and worked with the chandeliers when they were in Terminal 1 were also included in the documentary. Simon Cave, now a senior engineer at the airport, speaks about his time as an apprentice changing the lighting in the original Terminal 1 chandeliers and Rob Sawyer, airport duty manager and airport historian, recounted the chandeliers’ grandeur when they were revealed to the public as Terminal 1 opened in 1962.

The documentary demonstrates the chandeliers’ role in celebrating colleagues and partners of the Terminal 2 transformation, and other key stakeholders who will each receive a unique tag that matches up with ones attached to the parachutes in the terminal.

For decades, four glass chandeliers hung in the former Terminal 1, greeting millions of people as they prepared to fly on holiday or for business – before being taken down in 2003. Since then, they have just represented a fond memory for those who recalled a favourite family trip or friends’ getaway. 

Now, they have been brought back to life in a 482-piece installation that features colourful parachutes with stunning glass droplets made from the original chandeliers. They welcome passengers as they move from the security hall to the departure lounge in Terminal 2.  

The installation, named Atmospheric Reflections of the North, references the North’s industrial heritage with a nod to the airport’s own history as a training facility for the  Parachute Regiment in 1940 during World War 2.  

The droplets are clustered into cloud formations, an appropriate nod to the weather in the North, with each parachute reflecting a unique pattern of lines that represent the flight paths of the airport.  

Aluminium hexagon tags are attached to each chandelier, reflecting the city's industrial history. Each one has been allocated to an individual or organisation associated with the airport. Replica commemorative tags have been made out of brass similar to memorial coins received during significant historical milestones.  

The project was announced as part of the 85^th anniversary of the airport to ensure that the transformation of Terminal 2 left a lasting legacy with a nod to the airport and Manchester’s own history.  

The airport worked with Denton-based artist Liam Hopkins, of Lazerian, and Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) students to recreate the chandeliers. It was part of the MSA students’ MSA Live Project working on a real-life installation as part of their university degree.  

The original chandeliers were commissioned as part the overall design of Terminal 1 by architect Stefan Buzas. They were created by Italian glassmaker Bruno Zanetti at the Venini factory in Murano, Italy.

Every glass droplet within the installation has witnessed countless journeys, departures, reunions, and moments of anticipation. By redistributing these historic elements into individual parachute forms, we've created an artwork that celebrates movement, connection, and the spirit of travel, while ensuring an important piece of the airport's heritage continues to inspire future generations." 

Emily Crompton, Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture, said: 

“This project illustrates the whole idea behind MSA Live. It’s great to see the students working on something that has a real-world impact. We’ve got a lot of international students, so I know that some of them will be walking alongside it. It’s a wonderful achievement for the students that so many people will see their work.” 

The completion was marked by an event held in the terminal for all colleagues involved in the transformation of Terminal 2.  

The pub will be named The Belle Vue, in a nod to the city’s historic Victorian showground that housed a pub, zoological gardens, and stadium with a greyhound racing and speedway track. The Belle Vue Stadium was a focal point for social life in the city right up until 2020, when the final event was held at the venue. The area is still home to the National Speedway Stadium, opened in 2016, as part of the Belle Vue Sports Village.

The design of the 338 sqm pub in the Terminal 2 Departures lounge, which will have more than 300 covers, is inspired by the history of Belle Vue and the sporting culture of the North West of England.

Artistic impressions of the space show a clubhouse style design with a blend of classic and modern features, complete with sports memorabilia adorning the walls.

The Belle Vue will become the final major food and drink venue to open its doors as part of the airport’s decade-long, £1.3bn transformation of Terminal 2. The programme has seen the terminal more than double in size and win a prestigious UNESCO-backed architecture award, with a blend of high street names and Northern brands taking up residence in its departure lounge.

“We’re very excited to be able to reveal more detail about Terminal 2’s new JD Wetherspoon pub The Belle Vue, which will encapsulate the spirit and traditions of sporting entertainment in Manchester. This will be the first JD Wetherspoon pub at Manchester Airport and it is fantastic to have yet another household name taking its place among those opening units in the terminal, as part of its £1.3bn transformation."

“From the outset of the transformation programme, we were keen to ensure we had a varied food and drink offering in the terminal with a strong sense of place and the Belle Vue will complement the existing bars and pubs in Terminal 2, expanding the choice on offer to passengers, with something to suit all tastes and budgets. Our new Boutique Mall in Terminal 2, featuring a number of fashion's big names, will open this summer too - so it is shaping up to be an exciting few months.”

What really gives the terminal its Northern Soul, however, is the variety of local brands serving up a taste of Manchester in the bars and restaurants that have opened up in the extended terminal. Earlier this year, coffee chain Grindsmith became the latest in a growing list of local names taking up residence in the terminal, opening their new unit in partnership with WHSmith.

The Great Northern Market, which opened in February and brings the market hall street food concept to the airport for the first time, is also packed with Northern flavour.

Here we look at the brands from Manchester and the wider North that have helped shape the award winning, and distinctly Mancunian, passenger experience that the new terminal has to offer.

Amber Alehouse by Seven Bro7hers

They already run several successful bars in the city, but the Amber Alehouse marked Salford microbrewery Seven Bro7hers’ first foray into airport hospitality. It has proven so successful following its opening in 2021 that the gastropub has now expanded to take on additional space in the extended Terminal 2, as part of the second phase of the terminal’s 10-year, £1.3bn transformation programme. A creative menu ranging from light bites to pub grub and global flavours is complemented by Seven Bro7hers’ famous beers, and nods to Manchester’s music scene in its Hacienda-inspired design – and playlist.

Archie’s

Smash burgers are in vogue and brands like Archie’s helped set the trend. It opened its first unit in Manchester in 2010 and its inventive burger menu and distinctive bright pink décor won around a legion of online followers and celebrity fans, from Rita Ora to Kevin Hart. Its T2 unit has views across the airfield and opened as part of the first phase of the terminal’s transformation programme.

Barburrito

A Northern success story more than two decades in the making, Barburrito was the UK’s first burrito bar when it opened its doors in Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens in 2005. That store remains open to this day and has been joined by more than a dozen others across the country. Its T2 location means you can choose from its range of burrito bowls, or select from a range of fillings and load up your burrito, before your next flight.

Great Northern Market – Gooey, Yard & Coop

With more than 470 covers, the Great Northern Market is the largest eatery in the airport’s expanded Terminal 2 – and as the name suggests, it has a decidedly Northern influence. The kitchens in the food hall will rotate, but among the names involved at the outset are the Northern Quarter’s donut and cookie favourite Gooey. The team behind fried chicken brand Yard & Coop helped craft the menu in the Nashville Hot House kitchen, while Manchester-born Executive Chef, Amy Tomkinson and Merseyside-born Chef, Sam Grainger have curated other menus.

Grindsmith

Grindsmith was established by local duo Luke Tomlinson and Pete Gibson in 2014 and its Media City location became renowned across the city, leading to the establishment of a chain of coffee houses. Manchester Airport passengers are now able to enjoy their range of expertly crafted coffees using ethically sourced beans locally roasted in Ancoats.

Joseph Holt (The Bridgewater Exchange)

Joseph Holt brewery was founded almost 200 years ago – well before the first aircraft took to the sky – but the brand’s Bridgewater Exchange brewpub in T2 has taken off. It’s the only UK airport pub to brew beer on site, and its menu is crammed with traditional Northern grub like steak and ale pie and Manchester tarts, along with Northern twists on global cuisine.

Pot Kettle Black

The brainchild of two former professional rugby league players, Jon Wilkin and Mark Flanagan, Pot Kettle Black aims to replicate the chic independent coffee scene of Sydney that Mark experienced in his playing days and bring it to Manchester. Its first coffee house opened in Barton Arcade in 2014 and ‘PKB’ is now a chain with three permanent locations across the city, including one in T2 Departures.

San Carlo

Sophisticated Sicilian eatery San Carlo opened its first unit in Birmingham in 1992 but has become synonymous with the North, with restaurants in Liverpool, Leeds, Alderley Edge and no fewer than six in Manchester, which are renowned for their fresh modern feel and influencer-friendly backdrops as well as authentic Italian eats. Their Manchester Airport unit is in T2, on the mezzanine level.

The four venetian chandeliers that hung in Terminal 1 evoke memories of holidays for people all over the North – but were taken down as part of a redesign in the 90s. 

As part of the £1.3bn project to redevelop Terminal 2 the chandeliers have been brought back – but not quite as people remember them.  

The airport has worked with Denton-based artist Liam Hopkins of Lazerian and Manchester School of Architecture students to use the old chandeliers to create something new – influenced by a public consultation that shaped the final design.  

The 517-piece design includes colourful parachutes with the stunning glass droplets, from the original chandeliers, welcoming passengers as they move from the security hall to the departure lounge. 

The installation, named Atmospheric Reflections of the North, references the North’s industrial heritage and weather with a nod to the airport’s own history as a training facility for the Parachute Regiment in 1940 during World War 2.  

Aviation Minister Keir Mather MP came to see the chandeliers being installed with Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of the airport last week. They became the first people to attach special commemorative tags to the chandeliers. When the installation is complete each of the 517 droplets will be adorned with a small tag recognising individual colleagues, stakeholders and other partners involved in the decade long transformation of Terminal 2.

“But given that our £1.3bn super-terminal is so modern and state-of-the-art, it seemed appropriate that we reimagine them and give them a modern feel that still reflects our proud history. With the help of so many people, I really think we’ve achieved that. 

Seeing this go from concept to creation has been amazing and I can’t wait to see the final pieces come together in May.”

The original chandeliers hold a strong sense of memory, and for me it was important to preserve that connection while allowing the piece to evolve into something new. Working in collaboration with architecture students, we engaged the public through polls and questionnaires to capture what the North means to them, its landscapes, its weather, its character and its identity. Alongside this, I was also inspired by the airport’s history as a training base for the Parachute Regiment, bringing in ideas of suspension, movement and descent. 

Those combined influences shaped a shifting cloudscape of light that changes as people move through the space, reflecting the rhythm of rain alongside moments of brightness breaking through. There’s also a sense of walking into a sunset—lifting people’s emotions as they pass through the terminal and begin their journeys, whether they’re leaving or returning. By reworking the original glass droplets, the piece carries that history forward into something more dynamic and contemporary, connecting past and present while creating an uplifting experience for those heading off on holiday.”

The stunning parachutes with the original droplets will be clustered into cloud formations, an appropriate nod to the well-known weather in the North, with each parachute reflecting a unique pattern of lines that represent the flight paths of the airport. With the hexagon tags attached to each chandelier, made out of aluminium, reflecting the city's industrial history whilst the commemorative tags have been made out of brass similar to memorial coins received during significant historical milestones.  

Aviation Minister Keir Mather today met some of the 300 apprentices to have started their career on Manchester Airport’s historic transformation programme.

The £1.3bn investment has delivered an award-winning, state-of-the-art terminal that has set the UK’s global gateway in the North up to further increase its impact on the regional and national economy.

As well as delivering wide-ranging benefits to passengers, those working at the airport and businesses using it to trade globally, the transformation will leave a significant social and economic legacy.

That includes through the jobs it has created, especially for young people in the North who have taken their first step on the career ladder and gone on to work on other major projects across the region.

That was the focus of the Minister’s visit, as he checked out Manchester’s new Terminal 2 and met apprentices at different stages of their training, all of whom working on the project at some point.

Chloe O’Neill became the 300^th person to complete an apprenticeship through the programme and land a permanent job, marking a major milestone in terms of making sure the benefits of MAG’s investment are felt for years to come.

Minister Mather met Sam McCarthy and Rebecca Proctor who have recently completed apprenticeships as part of the programme .

He also met Ciaran Roche who started out his career as an apprentice on the first phase of the transformation programme almost a decade ago and has gone on to become a research and development expenditure credit coordinator for Laing O’Rourke.

Manchester Airport Managing Director Chris Woodroofe said:

 “Our brand-new, £1.3bn Terminal 2 is a world-leading piece of infrastructure that means we can proudly connect the people of the North to a route network of more than 200 destinations from a setting that rivals any airport terminal in Europe and beyond.

“But throughout its construction we’ve prioritised making sure that the impact of our investment goes far beyond elevating people’s experiences right here at the airport and provides real, tangible benefits for people in the region.

“A key part of that is providing real, sustainable work and training opportunities to young people through apprenticeships. When you speak directly to some of the apprentices who have worked on our transformation, it really brings home how MAG's investment in infrastructure here in the North has lasting impact on individuals and the economy as a whole.”

Over the course of the transformation programme apprentices have been employed directly through the airport and through contractors engaged in the programme. Over 8,000 apprenticeship weeks have been delivered.

The airport has also provided 714 work experience days, 12 undergraduate placements and opened its AeroZone education facility, providing opportunities for over 13,000 students.

Former MAG apprentice Chloe O’Neill said:

"My apprenticeship was an amazing experience and I wouldn't be here, working as a qualified quantity surveyor without it

“Having the chance to do work on a historic billion-pound investment programme isn't an opportunity I'd have had through other routes and it just shows the value and benefit of apprenticeships like this.

“It was a real honour to think that my work has helped build something as brilliant as Terminal 2 ." 

During his visit to the airport, Minister Mather also took in a full tour of the brand-new terminal, met teams from Virgin Atlantic and went out onto the airfield.

The whole footprint of the new terminal is now open to the public, with just some specific retailers and features left to open. Those include Manchester Airport’s first Wetherspoon’s and high-end retailers like Jo Malone and Chanel that will open in its new Boutique Mall alongside already-open outlets like the Fever-Tree bar.

Beyond the departure lounge, new branches of WHSmith, Costa and Gregg’s opened in the arrivals area of Terminal 2.

The investment in Terminal 2 is helping to unlock the full capacity of Manchester’s dual runways and driving the airport’s continued growth, letting it launch new routes like Islamabad with Pakistan International Airlines and Delhi with IndiGo, both of which launched in recent months.

It has also allowed the airport to migrate all airlines other than Ryanair to the new Terminal with Ryanair alone now operating from Terminal 3 – which is also in the middle of an expansion and improvement programme.

Terminal 3’s new bar Sporting Chance opened this week adding hundreds of new seats to the terminal and opening up a significant new space. Further improvements will take place over the coming months.

Sam McCarthy, Airfield Planning Assistant, MAG

Sam joined MAG as an Airport Operations Apprentice. He was on the apprenticeship scheme for 21 months and has now secured a permanent role as Airfield Planning Assistant (he is completing his course alongside his current role for the next three months).

During his apprenticeship, he gained hands-on experience across a wide range of critical operational areas, building a strong knowledge in both landside and airside operations. He worked in the following areas: Landside Ops, Resilience Team, Security and Airfield Operations

Chloe O’Neill, Quantity Surveyor Apprentice MAG

Chloe is a 3rd year degree apprentice quantity surveyor in MAG currently working on stand capacity and major airfields programme.

Her apprenticeship involves one day a week at Salford University for her quantity surveying degree and she is due to complete this in the year 2028.

When Chloe started her degree she worked on MAN-TP for about a year and a half with a team of surveyors. She helped draft and finalise contracts, process payments and went on many site visits.

Alexander Stott, Apprentice Project Engineer, NG Bailey Engineering

Alex Stott is a 2nd year apprentice project engineer for NG Bailey. Alex joined the NG Bailey apprenticeship scheme in August 2024, and has been working on the Manchester Terminal 2 project since February 2025.

Alex works as part of the quality team and is mainly focused on the job of asset tagging, as well as various other jobs to support NG Bailey in the final stages of MAN-TP.

Elektra Politis - Laing O’Rourke MAN-TP phase one

Elektra started working with us on MAN-TP in the first phase of the project almost 10 years ago as a business administration apprentice. After time working at the airport she went to Merseyside to be part of the team delivering the new stadium for Everton and she is now a senior health and safety manager at one of our major science projects in Oxford.

She is now in a well-respected role on one of Laing O’Rourke’s largest projects – The Ellison Institute for Technology. Her experience has taken her from being part of a team delivering a major infrastructure project, to a high-profile sporting project and now within science & research.

Ciaran Roche – Laing O’Rourke MAN-TP phase one

Ciaran Roche has been with Laing O’Rourke since September 2018, when he joined as an Assistant Document Controller on the MAN‑TP project. He later progressed to the role of Document Controller and has worked as an R&D Expenditure Credit Coordinator since August 2024.

-         Terminal 3 has expanded after closure of Terminal 1 and final signs changed last week, meaning Manchester is now a two-terminal airport

-         Shift makes for a simpler experience at the airport with Ryanair now the only airline operating out of Terminal 3 and every other airline using the brand new, £1.3bn Terminal 2

-         It sets the UK’s third biggest airport up to continue its growth over the coming years, with last month having been its busiest February on record

Manchester Airport recorded its busiest January yet last month – and at the same time set a record for how quickly passengers were able to get to security.

Over the course of the month more than 2m passengers used the UK’s global gateway in the North – and 91% of them waited for five minutes or less to get to security.

Waiting times at security have steadily reduced in recent years due to a number of factors including staffing levels, training and new ways of working.

The airport also now has new scanners in place in all security lanes meaning passengers no longer have to remove electronics or liquids from their bags, speeding up the process.

The most popular destinations during January were Dublin, Dubai, Amsterdam Paris and Qatar.

The majority of the airport’s passengers – everyone except Ryanair passengers - are now using the new, £1.3bn Terminal 2 – which is now almost fully open after a decade-long transformation programme.

Ryanair passengers are using a hybrid model using parts of Terminal 1 and 3. The hybrid model will remain in place until the Spring while parts of Terminal 1 are repurposed to become part of Terminal 3, as the buildings are linked.

At that point Terminal 1 will fully close – but work will continue to expand and improve Terminal 3 with a new sports bar – Sporting Chance – opening in the coming weeks and adding over 400 seats to the terminal.

Chief Airport and Asset Development Officer Ian Costigan said:

“Here at Manchester Airport we’re proud to connect the North to the world – so we’re obviously really pleased that more passengers than ever before are choosing to fly from the UK’s global gateway in the North.

“But what’s really important is that we’re also giving them a better service than ever – and with nine out of 10 of passengers in January getting to security in five minutes or less, that really is the case.

“In fact, 99.9% of our passengers for the whole month made it to security in under 15 minutes which shows that all the improvements we’ve made through our £1.3bn investment aren’t just skin deep and are making a real difference to people’s journeys.”

“And we aren’t finished with our improvements yet. The transformation of Terminal 2 may be almost complete – with just a few finishing touches and new retailers to come – but now we’re really picking up the work in Terminal 3 so Ryanair passengers will start to notice real differences soon.

“It’s certainly shaping up to be another epic year for Manchester Airport and I’m looking forward to more passengers getting to experience everything we’re doing here.”

The airport is gearing up for a busy period with the first school holiday of the year starting on Friday. Almost 1m passengers are expected to fly in or out between this Friday and the following Sunday.

Manchester Airport is nearing the end of its decade-long programme to reshape Terminal 2 into the ultra-modern, beating heart of the airport. An extension, which increased the terminal’s footprint by 150%, opened in 2021; the original terminal building was then closed and has been given a complete overhaul to bring it up to the same aesthetic and functional standards as the extension.

More than three quarters of the airport’s passengers are now using the new T2 facilities. The final touches to the new-look Terminal 2 are expected to be complete in time for the summer.

Great Northern Market in the airport’s new, £1.3bn Terminal 2 features six street food style kitchens alongside cookies and donuts from Gooey. The kitchens are all set around a central dining area, meaning groups of people can order from different places and still eat together.

Initial options include;

-          Nashville Hot House, serving buttermilk chicken and other Southern favourites

-          Black Iron Grill, serving smash burgers and loaded fries

-          Kouzina, with Greek and Mediterranean inspired street eats

Great Northern Market will be operated by Airport Retail Enterprises UK (ARE), a specialist airport food & beverage operator with experience of running eateries in Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Edinburgh airports. It is its first market hall operation and taps into the growing popularity of food courts offering a range of street eats from across the globe.

Great Northern Market will provide all the benefits of a market hall environment - variety, quality, value and a lively, social atmosphere - on a scale not previously seen in UK airports."

Manchester Airport is nearing the end of its decade-long programme to reshape Terminal 2 into the ultra-modern, beating heart of the airport. An extension, which increased the terminal’s footprint by 150%, opened in 2021; the original terminal building was then closed and has been given a complete overhaul to bring it up to the same aesthetic and functional standards as the extension.

More than three quarters of the airport’s passengers are now using the new T2 facilities. The final touches to the new-look Terminal 2 are expected to be complete in time for the summer.

Officially opened on 15th January by Fever-Tree co-founder Tim Warrillow and Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport MD, the new bar builds on Fever-Tree’s experience in creating premium bar spaces for travellers, following the launch of the Fever-Tree Bar at Edinburgh Airport in 2022. 

The opening comes as Manchester Airport nears the completion of its £1.3bn transformation programme, with the majority of its 50+ airlines now operating from its brand-new, award-winning Terminal 2. The redevelopment has created a bigger, brighter, more open terminal with an upgraded mix of shops, bars and restaurants, designed to elevate the passenger experience from check-in to take-off. 

A premium, nature-inspired space for travellers 

Located airside in Terminal 2, the new Fever-Tree Bar offers a stylish yet relaxing setting for travellers to unwind before their flight. At its heart is a striking signature Fever-Tree tree installation with the canopy stretching 11 metres above the bar, inspired by the botanical landscapes where the brand sources its ingredients. The design reflects Terminal 2’s modern architecture while reinforcing Fever-Tree’s commitment to quality, craft and exceptional drinking experiences. 

Perfectly paired drinks and small plates 

The menu showcases Fever-Tree’s award-winning mixers, paired with premium spirits from leading local and international distilleries. Travellers can enjoy a carefully curated selection of long mixed drinks, including Gin & Tonics, Highballs, Mules, Spritzes and Palomas. A menu of seasonal small plates is also available, designed to complement the drinks offering and provide a refined pre-flight treat. 

Building on the success of the award-winning Fever-Tree Bar at Edinburgh Airport 

Since opening in 2022, the Fever-Tree Bar at Edinburgh Airport has quickly become a favourite with travellers seeking a premium pre-flight experience. Its success has paved the way for expansion into Manchester Airport, one of the UK’s most important international gateways.

Almost 2.4m passengers flew through Manchester Airport last month – setting a new record and meaning the hub recorded 32m passengers in a year for the first time.

In total 32,088,626 passengers flew into or out of Manchester Airport in 2025 – up 4% on 2024 and cementing Manchester Airport’s place as the third biggest in the UK, behind only Heathrow and Gatwick.

The vast majority of those passengers flew from the airport’s brand-new, £1.3bn Terminal 2, which is now almost fully complete meaning December’s passengers were the first to experience several key new elements.

Last month saw the opening of the full footprint of the new terminal – that included opening a whole new route from security through a new, second World Duty Free store and into the airport’s new Boutique Mall – which will be home to high-end shops, a cocktail bar and more.

It opened up a significant amount of new space in the Departure Lounge and a huge new section of the terminal’s arrivals area.

It helped make sure the month’s passengers got a great experience at the airport – with 94% waiting for 10 minutes or less to get to security, and almost three quarters waiting five minutes or less.

The month was boosted by the airport’s busiest ever Christmas break – with over a million passengers flying between December 19, when most schools broke up, and the end of the month.

“Here at Manchester Airport, we’re proud to connect the North to the world - so the fact we were able to serve a record-breaking 32m passengers in 2025 is great news.

“But it’s not just about numbers – it’s about giving those passengers the best possible experience so they can start their holidays right here at the airport.

“That’s why I’m particularly proud that we were able to provide a brilliant service to our passengers with the vast majority of them barely waiting to get to security so they could be relaxing in our departure lounges more quickly.

“Once there, passengers in Terminal 2 will have noticed some big differences. The full footprint of the Terminal is now open including extra space as well as new shops and eateries. There’s still more to follow in the early part of this year too.

“That alone means it would be an exciting 2026 as we put those final touches on Terminal 2 – but we’re also going to be really getting stuck into the improvement work we’re doing in Terminal 3 as well, which will bring more space and new shops, bars and restaurants.

“We’ve got another epic year ahead and I’m looking forward to breaking more records so we can welcome even more passengers to the UK’s global gateway in the North.”

Now that the whole footprint of the new departure lounge is open to the public, there are just some specific retailers and features left to open. Those include the Great Northern Market – an airport-first market hall style eating area served by pop up street food kitchens – and Manchester Airport’s first Wetherspoon’s. These will open in the early part of 2026.

The Boutique Mall will be the airport’s high-end shopping area when shops including an airport-first Chanel store, Le Labo and Jo Malone open in the next few weeks.

The early part of the year will also see the installation of an artwork based on and using parts of the iconic chandeliers that hung in Terminal 1 when it opened to the public in the 1960s. The reimagined chandelier artwork will be in Security East.

Beyond the departure lounge, new branches of WHSmith, Costa and Gregg’s opened in the arrivals area of Terminal 2 – with Gregg’s handing out free sausage rolls to the first customers.

The investment in Terminal 2 is helping to unlock the full capacity of Manchester’s dual runways and driving the airport’s continued growth, letting it launch new routes like Islamabad with Pakistan International Airlines and Delhi with IndiGo, both of which launched in recent months.

It has also allowed the airport to migrate all airlines other than Ryanair to the new Terminal with Ryanair alone now operating from Terminal 3 – but using a new improved route into the terminal via Terminal 1 check-in.

Manchester Airport recently announced further details of its multi-million-pound plans to improve Terminal 3 by expanding it to make use of space that will be available when Terminal 1 closes. Some new parts of Terminal 3 will open early next year, including new sports bar Sporting Chance.

It is set to be Manchester Airport’s biggest and best Christmas on record with 1.5million passengers due to fly between 19 December and 4 January.

The UK’s global gateway in the North is ready for the influx of passengers with extra staff in place in key areas of the airport – as well as a few festive surprises.

The airport, which is the UK’s biggest outside London with a route network of more than 200 destinations, has also provided passengers with a few hints and tips to help them make sure they have a relaxing start to their Christmas trips.

The tips include reminding people not to travel with wrapped presents in their hand baggage – as these will have to be opened to make sure they are safe to travel.

The two most popular days to travel over the Christmas period will be Friday, 19 December – the final Friday before Christmas – and Sunday, 28 December – when lots of people who spent Christmas away will return at the same time as many people who are spending New Year abroad will be departing.

There will even be 85 departures on Christmas day and almost 35,000 passengers expected to fly into or out of the airport. Dubai will be the most popular destination on Christmas day, with more than 1,500 people heading there.

 It will come on the back of Manchester Airport’s busiest November on record. 2.2million passengers flew into or out of the airport during the month – a 4% increase on the previous November record set last year.

Over the course of the month 96% of passengers waited for 10 minutes or under to get to security and 99% waited for under 15 minutes.

The majority of passengers this Christmas will use Manchester Airport’s brand new, £1.3bn Terminal 2. Over the last few months airlines have been moving over the new facility so now all but Ryanair will operate from it.

“This year is set to be even busier than last, with 1.5million passengers due to fly in the two-week Christmas period.  With all our work in preparation, I feel confident that they will get a great service.

“Our new Terminal 2 is almost fully open, meaning more passengers can benefit from everything it has to offer – from the extra space and the high-tech security equipment to the shopping, bars and restaurants in the departure lounge.  It really is a terminal to rival any in capital cities across Europe.

“And people using Terminal 3 will see the first signs of change as we improve and expand that too.

“Of course, there are always things people can do to make sure their passage through the airport is smooth – including the simple things like checking-in ahead of time and packing smart, but also things like remembering not to take wrapped presents through security. You want your presents to be opened by your loved ones, not our security staff!

Manchester Airport’s top tips for Christmas travel:

Before you travel

-          Make sure you pack smart – know how much baggage allowance you have and pack accordingly. Even if you’re only travelling with hand baggage some airlines have different allowances to others.

-          If you roll your clothes up rather than folding them you can save space in your bags

-          If you’re travelling over Christmas you may be carrying presents with you – but remember you can’t take wrapped presents through security so wait until you get to your destination before you wrap any gifts

-          Make sure you know where your passport is and that you’ve got six months left on it – in some places this is a requirement to travel

-          Plan your journey to the airport – if you are travelling in the winter the road and rail networks are more vulnerable to disruption

-          If you’re driving, make sure you look on a map to see where your car park is

-          Consider taking public transport if you can – Manchester Airport is the best connected in the country with a train, tram and bus station at the heart of the airport within walking distance of all terminals

-          Check which terminal you’re flying from – following Manchester Airport’s £1.3bn transformation programme, knowing which terminal you’re flying from has never been easier; if you’re flying with any airline apart from Ryanair you’ll be using Terminal 2. Over Christmas Ryanair passengers should follow signs to Terminal 1 Departures A

-          Check-in online before you leave. Most airlines allow you to do this a week or more in advance. It is especially useful if you’re not bringing hold baggage with you as it means you won’t have to wait at check-in and can go straight to security

-          If you have hold baggage, why not check to see if your airline offers night-before bag drop. Many airlines offer a service that allows you to come to the airport the night before you fly, park for free and drop you bag off at a time when check-in isn’t busy and you won’t have to queue

-          Bring at least one outfit that’s suitable for the weather here in Manchester – you don’t have to save space in your baggage if you wear it

-          If you’re traveling with children, consider packing some activities and snacks for while you’re at the airport

-          It’s also worth talking to children about the things they will see and experience at the airport – airports can be overwhelming your young people

-          If you’re being dropped off at the airport, consider the free drop off point at JetParks 1. It’s a five-minute bus ride from the terminals and the buses run regularly, 24 hours a day

At the airport

-          The vast majority of passengers – around 95% - at Manchester Airport wait for less than 10 minutes to get to security. You can help make sure queues move smoothly by preparing for security in advance

-          Manchester Airport now has new scanners in place across all security lanes, which means electronics and liquids don’t need to be removed from bags

-          But, in accordance with Department for Transport rules, you can only take liquids of up to 100ml through security

-          There are exceptions for medicines and baby milk, including breast milk and formula

-          When you get to security being ready to take off jackets and coats, your belt, jewellery and other accessories will help

-          You only need to take off your shoes if they have metal toe caps

-          Make sure you don’t have anything sharp with you – this includes multi-tools and penknives

-          If you need a lighter you can bring one with you – but only one

-          Relax – our departure lounges are full of things to help you pass the time before your flight in style. You can enjoy full meals in a range of restaurants, refreshments and snacks in our bars or quick meals from an array of cafes and other eateries. There’s also World Duty Free for all your fragrances and more, clothing shops, sports shops, electronics, books and much more – you could even get your Christmas shopping done!

As part of the £1.3bn redevelopment of Terminal 2, the airport is set to open a first-of-its-kind ‘market hall’ style eating area. The Great Northern Market will feature six street-food kitchens set around a central dining area, meaning groups of people can order from different, rotating pop-ups and still eat together.

And now, speaking to the airport’s official podcast Manchester: Your Airport, MAN, airport Retail Director Richard Jackson has confirmed the opening line-up of kitchens.

The first kitchens to open will be:

-          Nashville Hot House, serving buttermilk chicken and other Southern favourites

-          The Black Iron Grill, serving smash burgers and loaded fries

-          Kouzina, with Greek and Mediterranean inspired street eats

In addition to the six street-food kitchens, which take inspiration from some of Manchester’s finest street eats, Mancunian institution Gooey will also be bringing its assortment of sweet treats to the Great Northern Market, from coffees to cookies and donuts.

“As you can imagine, it’s a very complicated build because we’re not just doing the one kitchen, we’re doing six, but it’s coming along well and we’re really excited to share it with our passengers.”

Due to open in the coming months, the Great Northern Market is one of more than 20 new shops and restaurants opening in T2 as part of the second phase of Manchester Airport’s 10-year, £1.3bn transformation programme, now nearing completion. Earlier this year, a new section of the departure lounge opened that will adjoin the Great Northern Market, housing the likes of LEGO®, Rituals and Joe & The Juice.

Once complete, the project will more than double the size of Terminal 2 and turn it into Manchester Airport’s main centre of gravity, with Terminal 1 set to close.

Taking podcast host Hywel Evans on a behind-the-scenes tour of areas yet to open, Richard shows off some of the other big additions to the terminal’s departure lounge that are yet to come– including a ‘boutique mall’ shopping strip with the likes of Pandora, Jo Malone and Tom Ford.

Renowned high street brands LEGO®, Rituals and Pandora are opening their first units at Manchester Airport, and new options for those wanting to grab a bite to eat or drink before they catch their flight include coffee giant Starbucks, baguette specialists Upper Crust, and juice bar Joe & The Juice. 

Steve and Emma Laxton, of Stalybridge, were the first passengers to use the new facilities. They were travelling to Tenerife with daughters Caitlin, 13, and Willow, six. 

The opening marks the latest milestone in the 10-year, £1.3bn transformation of Terminal 2, more than doubling the terminal’s size and creating a world-class passenger experience. An extension to the terminal opened in 2021, and the airport is now in the final stages of overhauling the original Terminal 2 building to bring it up to the same standard as the extension, mirroring the modern look and feel. 

More than 70 per cent of the airport’s passengers will use the new facilities and Terminal 1 is set to close when the project is completed later this year. 

Further shops and restaurants are expected to open later this year – including Chanel, Grindsmith by WH Smith, a Fever Tree cocktail and champagne bar, and the Great Northern Market – a food court with a selection of street food options. 

The finalised terminal will also include 13 new flexible aircraft stands and boarding gates, currently under construction, and a passageway linking the new security hall with the departure lounge will feature a chandelier installation, paying homage to the much-loved Venetian chandeliers that graced Terminal 1 in the 1980s and 1990s.   

More than 30 million passengers have already travelled through the terminal extension since it opened in 2021, and last year it claimed a prestigious, UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles award recognising its outstanding design.

More than 800,000 of the month’s passengers travelled during the school holiday, a surge driven by people taking advantage of the first break of the year to seek sunshine in places like Tenerife, Alicante and Dubai.

The 2,012,134 passengers recorded in February is 5.9% up on last year – the previous best February on record.

The successful month sets the scene for what is set be another record-breaking year for the UK’s global gateway in the North – which will be further boosted by the announcement of a new route to India launching with the country’s biggest airline IndiGo in the summer.

It will make Manchester the only airport in the North with a direct route to India – the world’s fastest growing major economy. With more than 500,000 people with Indian heritage living within two hours’ drive of Manchester Airport, it is likely to be popular, as well as being a catalyst for trade, tourism and investment.

February also saw Manchester Airport delivering consistent good service to passengers, with 98% of passengers waiting less than 15 minutes to get to security – and over three quarters getting to security in under five minutes.

“On top of that we’re continuing to add the new routes that people in the region want. Our new partnership with IndiGo means we’re the only Northern airport with a direct connection to India.

“We already serve more than 200 different destinations with 50 airlines, but India is a fantastic addition. Not only is it an incredible place to visit and the world’s fastest growing economy, but it’s a great connection for the half a million people of Indian heritage who live within two hours of the airport.

IndiGo’s new route between Manchester and India will launch three times per week in the summer. The airline will announce further details – including the exact destination in India – in the coming weeks.

Manchester Airport’s 10 year, £1.3bn transformation programme is coming to a conclusion this year. When it is complete the airport’s brand-new Terminal 2, which has already won the UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles for architecture and design, will have doubled in size.

Work to finish that element of the project is ongoing – including fitting out more than 20 new shops, bars, restaurants and cafes like the airport’s new Chanel store, its first JD Wetherspoon pub and its exciting new Great Northern Market eating concept.

There have also been developments on the airfield to make it more efficient and plans are underway to make some changes to Terminal 3.

The airport is also introducing a new barrierless system at its pick-up and drop-off areas as part of its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience.

The switch will improve the overall experience for both drivers and passengers by streamlining the process. By removing the existing barriers, drivers will pass through more smoothly without the need to stop on exit, helping reduce congestion and improving traffic flow.

Cameras will identify cars by their registration number and automatically record who has used the pick-up or drop-off area. Rather than stopping at a barrier and paying as they leave the area, drivers will leave and then pay the charge by midnight the following day. They can do this over the phone or online.

The new system will come into operation in late March.

Manchester Airport has given people a preview of what they will experience when its £1.3bn transformation programme is complete later this year.

The Northern gateway’s 10-year transformation programme will be finished later on this year when its brand-new Terminal 2 opens fully to the public.

The first phase of the programme – an extension that doubled the size of Terminal 2 - opened in 2021 and has already received the prestigious UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles award for architecture and design.

Since then, work to revamp the original part of the building, creating more space for seating, security, shops and restaurants and check-in has been ongoing.

Last year, the airport announced the names of more than 20 new shops, cafes, restaurants and bars will be opening in the new part of the terminal – including a Chanel outlet, LEGO Store, the airport’s first Wetherspoon pub, a Fever-Tree bar and its new Great Northern Market – a dining experience featuring a range of street-food-style kitchens around a central eating area.

Now the airport has shared a first look at what passengers will experience when they use the new terminal via a fly-through video that augments computer generated imagery of parts of the terminal that are under construction with the parts that have been finished to show the full experience.

The video begins in the new check-in area then goes into the security hall, which will be fully equipped with state-of-the-art new scanning equipment. It then turns left and flies upstairs to the international departure lounge before going through a new World Duty Free store.

After that, it goes into the Boutique Mall area – which will be home to high-end brands like Chanel and Fever-Tree – before joining with the section of the terminal that has already opened and features the striking honeycomb light art installation.

At that point the camera turns and passes through what is currently a wall but will be opened out to lead into a high street-style shopping area that will be known as The Avenue. There passengers will find the new LEGO Store, the Great Northern Market, the new JD Wetherspoon pub and more.

“Everyone here at Manchester Airport feels proud to be able to connect the North to the world – and that’s why it’s so exciting for us to finally be able to share this video our passengers, so they can get a preview of what they’ll be able to experience here later on this year.

“Our transformation programme has been 10 years and £1.3bn in the making but now we’re in the final stages of finishing everything off to open it to the public later this year. There’s a huge amount of work going on all over the airport but this video shows that it will all be worth it.

“That work isn’t just limited to Terminal 2 either. We’re modernising our airfield, building a new road to improve access to the new terminal – and we’ll soon be able to say more about some work we’re doing in Terminal 3 too.”

The video fly-through is the latest milestone in the transformation project, which is coming to a conclusion after a decade. In that time, thousands of people have worked on the project – several hundred of whom were apprentices starting out their careers – while an independent report commissioned last year showed around 16,400 extra jobs will be generated by 2040 as a result of the economic activity stimulated by the expansion of the airport and its route network.

More than 35 million passengers have already used the Terminal Two extension – which received the prestigious UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles architecture award in 2023.

Last year, plans were announced to reinstate one of Terminal 1’s iconic chandeliers as part of an art installation. A public competition was held to choose the final design and the winner will be announced soon before it is installed near the security area in the new part of the Terminal.

The terminal’s footprint was more than doubled in the first phase of the programme, and the newly-built extension opened in July 2021 to limited fanfare at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just three flights departed on the day it opened its doors, with passengers and staff required to wear masks and follow social distancing rules.

Since then the new-look terminal has gone from strength to strength, serving more than 29.2m people - over 800,000 passengers per month on average. A total of 21 airlines now operate flights to 109 different destinations from the terminal, with exciting new routes including Las Vegas and Shanghai launched from Terminal Two in recent months.

The terminal extension saw the addition of a new check-in hall, 10 new security lanes, a brand-new international departure lounge with a giant media screen and hexagon-shaped feature lighting, an immigration hall with 20 e-gates and 32 desks, and 35 new restaurants and shops in both Departures and Arrivals including an array of Northern eateries.

The new-look terminal’s crowning moment came last November when it was named as one of the world’s most beautiful airport terminals by the UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles architecture awards.

The second phase of the terminal’s transformation is now underway, with the original terminal building being given a complete overhaul to bring it up to the same specification as the extension. Once the project is completed in 2025, Terminal One will permanently close, and around three quarters of all Manchester Airport’s passengers will have the benefit of these new, state-of-the-art facilities.

The bridge will connect the existing terminal building to a new ‘pier’ currently under construction, which will offer extra aircraft gates, stands and seating.

More than 270 pieces of steel went into constructing the new bridge, comprised of metal decking and 150mm concrete slab flooring. The 90ft long, 33ft high bridge was pre-assembled on the airfield over the course of three months and then moved into its final place last week using a giant Shelf-Propelled Motorised Unit, a process which took eight hours.

The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (‘MAN-TP’) is scheduled for completion next year, and will see Terminal Two more than double in capacity. Around three quarters of the airport’s passengers will use the new-look terminal when it is completed. Firms working on the link bridge included Mace, which is overseeing the second phase of the MAN-TP project, and its supply chain partners, Martifer, Bethell, AMCO, LPL Construction Services and DGP.

The changes to the airfield will capacity and allow the world’s biggest passenger planes to pass side by side as they taxi to and from Terminal 2.

The extra pier will almost double the number of aircraft that can operate from the brand-new super-terminal while offering passengers more space while they wait.

Both projects are being delivered innovatively to make sure the airport can operate more effectively and help it reduce the carbon footprint of development.

The redesigned airfield significantly increases the number of planes that can operate on it with minimal need for extra concrete. The changes will remove a bottleneck that meant the airfield could not be used to its full capacity. They will also allow even the world’s biggest passengers planes – Airbus A380s – to pass side by side as they move around Terminal 2.

Meanwhile 150 pre-cast piles have already been successfully installed to support the pier and a number of steel structures have been put in place to allow different sized planes to be connected to the pier via air bridges. The new pier will significantly increase the number of planes the terminal will be able to handle and let it accommodate Airbus A380s.

The project is being delivered by construction managers Mace and contractor Martifer using an innovative process known ‘kit of parts architecture’ for parts of the structure, which means they have actually been constructed away from the airport and then installed as whole units, rather than being built on-site necessitating a larger number of traffic movements.

It means the carbon emissions from the project can be significantly cut and also speeds up the building process while minimising disruption on the airfield.

Taken together the two developments will mean Manchester Airport can expand its offering to passengers in the North. It already offers more than 200 destinations and the extra capacity and space for more modern planes will let it increase that number.

“For a few months now most of the work on the pier has been happening underground, preparing the way for installing this complex structure.

“Now we’re seeing the first visible signs of what’s about to be built and it’s really exciting. We’ve worked closely with Mace and Martifer to make sure this is delivered in such a way as to cut delivery times, minimise disruption and decrease the carbon footprint of the project at the same time.

“We’re looking forward to seeing all the progress that will follow over the coming months before it is completed next year.”

The pier is the most significant new structure being built in the second and final phase of the airport’s £1.3bn Transformation Programme (MAN-TP), first announced in 2015 with a 10-year vision to revolutionise the passenger experience at the UK’s global gateway in the north.

More than 500 jobs are being created during the construction phase of the project – which is forecasted to generate up to 16,400 jobs by 2040, according to independent analysis.

The new pier will mirror Terminal 2’s Pier 1, which opened in 2021, and will provide 13 new spacious boarding gates and flexible aircraft stands for next-generation aircraft.

The first phase saw Terminal 2 more than double in size, with the new facility having received positive feedback from passengers and airlines since opening in the summer of 2021. The second phase will see the original building upgraded with a second security hall and a new-look, extended departure lounge, along with reconfigurations of the airfield to make operations more efficient.

Upon completion in 2025, over 70% of all passengers will use the expanded Terminal 2, which will also boast 27 new shops, bars and restaurants, including a high-street style shopping area, a champagne bar and a food hall.

The airport is working with students from the Manchester School of Architecture and a locally based specialist sculptor to take one of the old chandeliers and turn it into a new piece of art that will be displayed in the International Departure Lounge.

And now people who live in and travel from Manchester are being asked to share their thoughts and feelings about travel with the students to help inspire the final project.

The students have put together a questionnaire that can be accessed here. It takes less than five minutes to complete and invites people to answer five questions including ‘what makes the North a unique tourist destination?’ and ‘what impression do you want tourists to take away from their experience of the North?’.

Then the students will use the feedback to help them reimagine the chandelier to create a piece of art that will be seen by millions of passengers every year.

That design will be realised with the help of expert glass sculptor Liam Hopkins who runs Denton-based Lazerian studio.

“Manchester School of Architecture is excited to be collaborating with Manchester Airport on their project to re-imagine the iconic glass chandeliers from Terminal 1.

“As part of MSA LIVE, an annual programme of live projects which sees architecture students working on real life projects with an external client, this project will see a group of 15 students working alongside an artist to design a new installation for the terminal using the original glass from the chandeliers.

“Their design work will be viewed by the thousands of passengers passing through Manchester Airport every day, providing a fantastic opportunity for both the students and airport.”

Three chandeliers were the centre piece of the departure hall at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1 when it first opened in 1962. The 17ft chandeliers feature 1,300 piece of crystal between them and were designed by architect Stefan Buzas and hand blown by glass maker Bruno Zanetti at the Venini factory in Murano, Italy, at a cost of £3,000 each.

They were removed in 2003 for modernisation work on the terminal. One is on display at the World of Glass Museum in St Helen’s the other has been at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. The one the students will work with had been kept in storage at the airport.

The final artwork will be a centre piece of the second phase of the airport’s brand-new Terminal 2. The first phase opened in 2021 and features a striking honeycomb light installation, which helped it be awarded the prestigious UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles for design and architecture last year.

The airport challenged local sixth form students to design artwork to adorn a new section of the airport put in place to allow passengers to access gates while work continues on Terminal 2 as part of the airport’s £1.3bn transformation programme.

The winning students from University Technical College (UTC) Media City had the opportunity to see their artwork on display at Manchester Airport last Friday, as they took a tour of the new-look Terminal 2.

Students from six colleges and tertiary education providers had entered the competition, which asked them to produce graphics depicting destinations that passengers can fly to from the terminal.

Desings were judged by representatives from the airport and from contractors working on the ongoing £1.3bn Terminal 2 transformation programme, including Pascall + Watson, Mace and Agency Creative.

An overall prize was awarded to UTC Media City, and four individual winners were selected from other colleges and sixth-forms. The winning artwork is now on display in a new temporary access tunnel, which links the terminal’s departure lounge with some of its gates, bypassing the construction site where the final phase of the transformation programme is underway.

Jonathan Irwin, a teacher at UTC Media City, said: “The students really enjoyed the freedom the brief provided and the opportunity to explore different techniques and processes to design their work.

“When the students visited the airport and saw their work on the wall, it made them feel extremely proud of what they'd achieved. They really felt honoured with a ribbon cutting, tour and photos taken with their work. It was an amazing journey and experience for the students to work for something so public and prestigious.”

Rick Wagstaffe, Director of MAN-TP Change at Manchester Airport, added: “The artwork that UTC Media City students submitted was brilliant – it was creative, original and does a great job of capturing the sheer variety and diversity of the destinations passengers can fly to from this terminal. We’re sure it will brighten their journeys.”

The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme is the largest ever investment made in the Northern gateway by MAG, which also owns London Stansted and East Midlands Airports.

MAG Deputy CEO Ken O’Toole was on hand to put the first spade in the ground, as work started on the pier on Monday.

It comes after it was announced he will become Group CEO from 1^st October last week.

Mr O’Toole said: “We are pleased to be beginning work on what is a major milestone in our transformation of Manchester Airport.

“Our £1.3bn transformation programme is the largest investment ever made in Manchester Airport, and will create thousands of jobs, revolutionise the customer experience and ensure we connect to the North to even more global destinations in the years ahead.

“We are already seeing the benefits of the first phase of our investment, with passengers and airlines providing excellent feedback on our extended Terminal 2. Through this second phase, we will deliver yet more improvements to the passenger experience and cater for the growing network of airlines operating from Manchester.

“As we break ground on this pier, I look forward to seeing the project progress to its conclusion in 2025, cementing Manchester’s role as the UK’s global gateway in the North.”

The news was welcomed by Aviation Minister Baroness Vere, who said: “The UK is renowned for its cutting-edge technology, and with Manchester Airport’s new pier set to cut emissions by 40%, it will lead the way in creating a sustainable sector and will accelerate our progress towards net zero.

“The development of the pier showcases the aviation sector's significant role in driving economic growth, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.

“This is a significant milestone for the aviation industry, and we look forward to seeing Manchester Airport set new standards for the rest of the industry to follow.”

Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "Manchester Airport is the city, and the North's, gateway to the world. This marks the start of another significant step in its transformation to ensure it is fit for the future, creating construction jobs in the immediate term and helping to support tens of thousands of jobs and other opportunities in the longer term.”

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said: “It’s great to see this investment going in to Manchester Airport. Having been through Terminal 2 myself, it’s clear that this is a facility that the city-region can rightly be proud of, and this investment will improve the passenger experience and provide good employment opportunities for young people. The airport’s role as the UK’s global gateway in the North matches Greater Manchester’s ambition to be a city-region that competes with capitals across the world.” 

The new pier will be a short walk from the departure lounge and will incorporate flexible stands, accommodating either wide or narrow bodied aircraft in the same footprint. It will offer 12 additional ‘contact gates’, which means passengers can directly walk onto the aircraft.

Construction of the new pier will utilise cutting-edge techniques to reduce the amount of embodied carbon emissions by up to 40 per cent, including pre-casting the concrete used and minimising the amount of excavation work required, through the use of an innovative piling solution. Mace will use a ‘kit of parts’ approach to build the pier, manufacturing nodes and links off-site, allowing the on-site construction elements to be completed more quickly and with minimal disruption on the airfield.

More than 500 construction jobs will be created in the second phase of the MAN-TP programme, while independent analysis shows around 16,400 extra jobs will be generated by 2040 as a result of the economic activity stimulated by the expansion of the airport and its route network.

The same analysis – by York Aviation - predicts that Manchester Airport’s current contribution to the Northern economy of £3.5bn is expected to soar by nearly 80%, to £6.3bn by 2040 as a result of the full delivery of the transformation programme.

And a further £2.9bn boost will be triggered through the increased productivity of businesses travelling and trading globally through Manchester over the same period.

In its role as lead construction contractor on the project, MACE will also engage 1,500 young people across Greater Manchester, aims to raise £70,000 for local charities and donate 500 hours of employee volunteering time. MACE and its supply chain partners are also targeting that at least 5% of the workforce should be apprentices for the duration of the project.

“This is only possible due to the collaborative and integrated relationship with have with the client and supply chain. By working as one team with shared values and objectives, we’re making excellent progress towards our 2025 open-to-passengers target.”

More than 40 volunteers from companies working on the £440m revamp of the airport’s Terminal 2 spent the day supporting the upgrade of the Pendlebury Centre, Stockport.

The Pendlebury Centre is a pupil referral unit providing support for pupils who struggle with their social, emotional and mental health needs. It ensures that special educational needs are identified and understood and aims to equip students and families with the skills, knowledge and resilience to face future challenges.

The team of volunteers came from companies including Manchester Airport itself, its construction partner MACE, as well as contractors including NG Bailey, DGP Logistics and McCrory Brickwork.

Between them, they donated 200 hours of time working on jobs including painting fences and digging borders. All materials were donated and funded by Manchester Airport, Mace and other supply chain partners including WysePower, Bethell Group, Hoare Lea, Beau Services and Speedy Services.

Jane Maxey, headteacher at the Pendlebury Centre, said:

“I cannot thank the volunteers enough for the support that they are giving to The Pendlebury Centre.  The work that has been completed to date has transformed our outdoor space. 

“What was once an uninviting and uninspiring area has become a welcoming and safe space for our students, staff and visitors.  The diligence, commitment, professionalism and genuine care that has been shown to us has been outstanding.

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside people who have such a 'can do attitude' and who want to make a difference for our vulnerable children and their families.  A most sincere thank you to MACE, Manchester Airport Group, NG Bailey, DGP Logistics, McCrory Brickwork and all of the volunteers.  Your support is greatly appreciated.”

The first part of the work on the Pendlebury Centre will focus on the entrance area; future phases will see the installation of new fencing to make it more private and transform a small area into an outdoor classroom.

The volunteering project is part of a wider package of measures to ensure Manchester Airport’s overall £1.3bn transformation programme leaves a legacy for the region.

In 2021 the extension to Terminal 2 opened, doubling the size of the terminal and providing the latest technology and a bright, modern environment.

Manchester Airport has now embarked on the second phase of the transformation, which will see the original Terminal 2 building refurbished to match the quality and functionality of the new extension, delivering a modern, state-of-the-art passenger experience throughout, and introducing an even greater array of shops, restaurants, and other facilities for those travelling through it.

The extended departure lounge will feature a food market serving a variety of world cuisines and quick eats, for those who prefer a more casual dining experience, alongside a boutique high street-style shopping area complete with a Champagne Bar and premium brands, artisan cafes and a brasserie.

The shopping zone, to be known as The Avenue, will have a vibrant and airy feel. Each store front will open onto airfield views, with plenty of passenger seating for added comfort. The airport is searching for retailers selling toys, fashion, accessories and travel essentials to take up units in this area, and is seeking out partners who will showcase the best of the North in their units, through the design of their stores and the range of products on offer.

Richard Jackson, Retail Director at Manchester Airport, said: “We are well aware that our guests’ holidays start at the airport and we want them to enjoy their time here - whether that means sipping craft beer brewed at the airport in a bar overlooking the airfield, or eating an artisan pizza. We already have a great range of food and drink options in Terminal Two, with local brands which create a strong sense of place, but we're looking to build on that with all-new offerings, including a champagne bar and a market hall style food court.

“We’re also seeking retail partners who will bring a high-class offering, tailored to the needs of the travelling public. The first phase of the project saw some exciting brands come on board, but we’re now keen to build on that and provide a more varied and comprehensive retail experience to cater for the tastes of the millions of passengers who will pass through the terminal’s doors.”

The plans were revealed as the airport begins the tendering process for more than two dozen new units this month, with a view to announcing the successful applicants by next April.

The expanded retail and restaurant offering forms part of the transformation programme’s second phase, which will see the original Terminal Two building remodelled and upgraded, in sync with the recently-opened terminal extension. Work is expected to be completed by 2025.

More than 80 per cent of the airport’s passengers are expected to travel through Terminal Two once the second phase of the transformation programme is complete, with an outbound catchment area stretching from Scotland to North Wales and the Midlands, and millions of international visitors pouring in.

A blend of regional and national brands are expected to operate the new units, in keeping with the areas of the terminal that are already open to passengers. The first phase of the project saw a number of Mancunian favourites taking up residence in Terminal Two, from burger and shake chain Archie’s, Italian restaurant San Carlo and coffee brand Pot Kettle Black, to Manchester brewers Joseph Holt and Seven Bro7hers. They were joined by household names like Costa Coffee, WH Smith, Pret a Manger and Wagamama.

Mark Flanagan, owner of Pot Kettle Black, said: “Opening an outlet in Manchester Airport together with our partners HMSHost UK has been an incredible experience. We started in Manchester nine years ago in just a small premises in Barton Arcade. Now through the branch in the airport we’re reaching customers who come from all over the world and we’re even seeing international customers visiting our City Centre branches because they’ve been to the one in the airport. Back in 2014 we never thought we’d be an international brand but the airport branch is helping us do that.”

The investment will transform the passenger experience at the UK’s third largest airport, with new spacious facilities, state-of-the-art technology and equipment, and an exciting array of shops, bars, restaurants and airport lounges.

It will see Manchester Airport expand its role as the UK’s global gateway in the North, connecting the region to even more international destinations, including some of the world’s most important economic markets.

The investment is the final phase of the £1.3bn Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP), first announced in 2015 with a 10-year vision to revolutionise the customer experience at the Northern hub and unlock the potential of its two full-length runways.

The first phase saw Terminal 2 more than double in size, with the new facility having received positive feedback from passengers and airlines since opening in July 2021.

This latest investment will complete the transformation of Terminal 2, delivering improvement to all stages of the passenger journey – from check-in to baggage reclaim - as well as upgrading its airfield to cater for next generation aircraft.

Upon completion in 2025, around 80% of all passengers will use the expanded Terminal 2, with Terminal 1 set to close – 63 years after it was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1962.

More than 500 jobs will be created in the construction phase alone, while independent analysis shows around 16,400 extra jobs will be generated by 2040 as a result of the economic activity stimulated by the expansion of the airport and its route network.

The same research – by York Aviation – reveals that Manchester Airport’s current contribution to the Northern economy of £3.5bn is expected to soar by nearly 80%, to £6.3bn by 2040 as a result of the full delivery of the transformation programme.

And a further £2.9bn boost will be triggered through the increased productivity of businesses travelling and trading globally through Manchester over the same period.

“This investment will be a huge boost for the North, benefitting passengers flying in and out of the region as well as supporting thousands of jobs.”

The expanded Terminal 2 has already welcomed a number of new airlines to Manchester, and seen the launch or relaunch of a string of key routes.  

Examples include a brand-new service to Kuwait, a revived service to Beijing and a first UK Transatlantic base for AerLingus.

Enabling works for the second phase of the project are already underway, and planned improvements include:

•           - Doubling the size of the existing departure lounge, with a wider selection of shops and food and drink outlets, showcasing the best of what the North has to offer

•           - The construction of an additional security hall, fitted with next-generation security scanners.
•  
•           - A new pier, matching the look and feel of the first pier that opened in 2019. It will include spacious gates
•  
•           - A new dual taxiway system to improve airfield efficiency, with flexible aircraft stands
•  
•           - More than doubling the terminal’s hold baggage capacity to over 5,000 bags per hour, with two new teardrop check in islands.

The news has been welcomed by business and political leaders.

The flagship facility opened to its first customers last week, with flights initially being operated by Jet.com, TUI and then Singapore Airlines.

After the success of these operations – and as travel restrictions ease from today (19^th July) – the Northern gateway has confirmed the next wave of airlines that will start flying from the new state-of-the-art T2.

A series of new shops, bars and restaurants have also opened their doors for the first time, with details below.

Airline Moves

The Terminal Two extension opened to the public on 14^th July with Jet2.com as the first airline. This was swiftly followed by TUI operating from there on 15^th July.

Singapore Airlines followed next, moving over on Saturday, the next airlines to move will be Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Brussels Airlines tomorrow on 20^th July. airBaltic will then go over on 21^st July, followed by Ethiopian Airlines on 22^nd July.

airBaltic is a new carrier at Manchester Airport, it started services to Riga in Latvia earlier this month. Singapore Airlines has flown from Manchester Airport for more than 30 years and will once again connect the North to the Far East and beyond through the excellent onward connectivity at the carrier’s Changi Airport.

Passengers travelling with these airlines from the dates above should now use Terminal Two. If anyone has Manchester Airport car park or lounge bookings, these will be moved across and customers notified accordingly.

As summer progresses and international travel restrictions ease, further airlines will move across and they will be communicated appropriately. Passengers can also keep an eye on the airport’s social media channels for the latest advice, guidance and information.

Retail, Food and Drink

As well as offering the latest innovations in travel to enhance the customer experience, the new Terminal Two also offers a range of exciting shops, bars and restaurants. With options to suit every taste and budget, passengers will be spoilt for choice.

Initially only a handful of units have opened, in line with current passenger numbers. These include popular Manchester brands such as Archie’s and the Amber Alehouse, in partnership with Se7en Brothers, in addition to well-known high street names including Pret-a-Manger and Costa Coffee.

On Wednesday, M&S will open its new store in Terminal Two Arrivals, with Accessorize’s outlet in Departures also due to open to customers on Thursday. The remaining units will open as more airlines move across as passenger numbers increase. For more information on what will be available see here.

In addition to the bars and restaurants, passengers can also enjoy Manchester Airport’s two lounges – Escape and 1903. The lounges have a combined capacity of 400 passengers and are located on the upper level of the enlarged terminal. They are accessed from the main departure lounge and both benefit from floor to ceiling windows, providing panoramic views over the airfield.

Covid-19 safety measures and processes

Throughout the pandemic Manchester Airport has had a range of Covid-19 safety measures in place. These include face coverings, Perspex screens and enhanced cleaning. The new terminal has all the necessary measures in place to ensure passenger safety. Manchester Airport, assisted by the CAA and Public Health England, has established and maintained a range of Covid-secure activities to meet international guidance on Covid safety measures set out by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The assessment looks at compliance with guidance on general hygiene, cleaning, masks and face coverings, health screening and declarations, the mental health and well-being of employees and passengers, as well as specific steps for passengers with reduced mobility.

The recognition comes in the week that Manchester Airport has opened its new Terminal Two extension offering passengers state-of-the-art facilities as they jet off from the Northern hub.

Manchester Airport receiving this accreditation now means all three MAG airports (London Stansted and East Midlands) have it.

A Jet2.com flight to Menorca was the first to take-off from the expanded Terminal Two, which is the centrepiece of the hub’s £1bn Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP).

Work started on the transformation in 2017 and – despite a delay of more than one year to the opening as a result of the pandemic – the facility was officially opened by Manchester Airport’s Managing Director Karen Smart and Jet2.com’s General Manager at Manchester Airport, Marc Burns, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony today.

Passengers then had their first opportunity to sample the new terminal’s state-of-the-art facilities, including a worker bee inspired honeycomb lighting feature and a giant media wall.

A range of new shops, cafes, bars and restaurants also opened their doors today, with more to open throughout the week as passenger numbers increase.

In true Manchester Airport style passengers were treated to a range of entertainment from local bands and a DJ. Plus, a prize draw giveaway for Jet2.com flights and 1903 Lounge passes.

The first passengers through the doors going to Menorca were the Thompson family from Preston, Lancashire. It consisted of mum Emma Thompson, dad Gary Thompson and children Brad, Ben and Lenny. Gary Thompson commented on being the first passengers through: “It was a big surprise to be the first passengers in Manchester Airport’s new Terminal Two. It looks very posh, lovely and modern. We only travel once a year and have been through all the other terminals, but this new one is definitely better than anything we’ve seen before.”

Two further Jet2.com flights will depart from the terminal today, and from tomorrow, TUI passengers will join them. It is hoped that further airlines will transition to operating from the new terminal in the coming weeks as demand for travel increases, with a government announcement due tomorrow on its traffic light lists for travel.

The expanded terminal’s light, bright and airy check-in hall sets the tone for the passenger experience, with a modern security area equipped with the latest technology, and a departure lounge packed with iconic features including a honeycomb light installation and a new 81 square metre digital screen.

A wide range of new shops, bars, cafes and restaurants will feature in the new terminal, with local brands Archie’s, The Bridgewater Exchange by Joseph Holt and Pot, Kettle, Black open initially, in addition to two new, exclusive passenger lounges.

Construction firm Laing O’Rourke has spearheaded the programme of works, supported by partners including architects Pascall + Watson, design consultancy Arcadis and airfield works contractor Galliford Try.

Together with several dozen partners, in fields as varied as IT and Catering, they have successfully delivered the megaproject to specification.

More than 8,000 tonnes of steel have been used to create the new terminal extension, which is 81,000 square metres. It is large enough to accommodate Manchester United’s Old Trafford pitch 11 times over, with room to spare.

Benefits to the wider region have included the creation of more than 1,500 jobs in the construction phase alone, including more than 150 apprenticeships giving young people an opportunity to take their first steps on the career ladder.

I visited the terminal last year before the devastation of the Covid 19 pandemic and was really impressed with the project and it's offering for travellers. I can't wait until people are able to travel safely and freely and the terminal is able to open fully. All the hard work that has gone into reaching this milestone is to be commended, as is the ongoing work taken by staff at Manchester Airport to make it covid secure. It's really great to see the green shoots of recovery coming out of my own constituency here in Wythenshawe and Sale East. Congratulations Manchester Airport."

Jet2 and TUI flights will operate from the flagship facility initially, with others to follow in the weeks ahead, as the Government’s policy for double-vaccinated passengers comes into play.

The extended terminal is the centrepiece of MAG’s £1bn Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP), which was first announced in 2015.

It was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020, but this was put on hold after the coronavirus pandemic ground international travel to a halt.

To ensure the smoothest possible opening when flying resumes in earnest, MAG has agreed a staggered launch of the terminal with its airline partners. It will see Jet2 start flying from there from 14^th July, with just three flights on the first day – to Menorca, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca.

TUI will operate flights from the terminal from 15^th July, with services to a range of destinations including green-listed Malta and Madeira. Singapore Airlines will move over on the 17^th.

With the Government set to update its red, amber and green lists on the 15^th – coupled with the amber list exemption for double vaccinated passengers from 19^th July – further announcements about new flights from Terminal 2 will follow over the coming weeks.

That will see more airlines move across and more retailers and food and beverage outlets confirm their launch dates.

“The impact of the pandemic on the travel industry means we are not able to immediately welcome as many customers and airlines into this fantastic new facility as we would have hoped.

“As Government restrictions continue to be eased, and travel to more destinations is opened-up in the weeks ahead, we will be making further announcements about the carriers and retailers operating from T2.

“In the meantime, we look forward to celebrating this milestone and welcoming those who are travelling through the new terminal later this week. I would also like to thank all our colleagues and partners for their hard work and dedication in getting us to this point.”

The expanded terminal has a light, bright and airy check-in hall, with designs that set the tone for what passengers can expect throughout.

Once bags are dropped-off, passengers will head into the new security area, which has 10 lanes that are 29 metres long. They introduce the latest technology, allowing passengers to flow through as quickly and easily as possible.

The new departure lounge is where the new terminal experience comes to life. New features include a honeycomb light installation with 16 million settings that proudly illuminates the space, giving a nod to the famous Manchester worker bee. A new 81 square metre digital screen will take centre stage to provide interactive content and information to passengers.

A wide range of new shops, bars, cafes and restaurants will feature in the new terminal, including many brands that have been born and bred in the North, as well as a series of popular chains – all food and beverage outlets have committed to high street prices.

Initially, Pret-a-Manger, Costa Coffee, KFC, The Amber Alehouse and The Bridgewater Exchange by Joseph Holt will be open to customers. Manchester institution Archie’s will open its new Terminal Two location on Thursday, as will juice bar VIT, while other venues will open once more passengers start using the terminal and further announcements will follow.

Two airport operated lounges will also open, offering passengers additional luxury and a relaxing space pre-flight.

It is not just departing passengers that will get a new experience. Those arriving will also get to sample what the new terminal extension has to offer. This includes a new immigration facility, which is four times larger than the current space, and a spacious, bright arrivals hall. A modern new baggage reclaim will also open, with three of eight new baggage belts starting to operate.

The new terminal will also be fully Covid-19 secure and will have a range of safety measures in place that passengers have experienced throughout the airport during the pandemic, including an enhanced cleaning and sanitising regime.

Airlines

Jet2 will operate from the new terminal effective from Wednesday 14 July and TUI flights from the terminal will begin the following day. Singapore Airlines will move over on the 17^th, with more airlines due to move across during the course of the summer.

Passengers can consult their airlines for further information and can also keep an eye on the airport’s social media channels, where airline moves will be posted as and when they occur.

Food and Drink

The new terminal will be home to many new exciting eateries for passengers to enjoy before their flight. A lot of these are well known local brands, offering something for all tastes and budgets.

The full list of eateries was announced 2019 and five of these will open on Wednesday. As passenger numbers increase, the airport expects that more of these will open in line with demand. Passengers travelling via the new terminal from Wednesday will be able to enjoy:

Manchester burger chain Archie’s will be serving up their famous burgers, shakes and waffles from the following day, and juice bar VIT are also due to open their unit on Thursday.

Lounges

Manchester Airport’s Escape and 1903 Lounges will both feature in the new terminal. Each will offer passengers a touch of luxury and relaxing space before their flights.

The lounges will have a combined capacity of 400 passengers and will be located on the upper level of the enlarged terminal. They are accessed from the main departure lounge and both benefit from floor to ceiling windows, providing panoramic views over the airfield.

Car Parking

In addition to the new terminal, the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme also saw the creation of a new car park, T2 Multi Storey West, which was completed in 2019. Both this car park and the pre-existing T2 car park, now known as T2 Multi Storey East, will be open for passengers flying through the extended terminal from Wednesday.

Covid-19 safety measures and processes

The milestone was reached ahead of National Apprenticeship Week, which takes place from 3^rd – 7^th February 2020. The government-backed event aims to raise awareness of apprenticeships and vocational education opportunities across the country.

James Heslop, 19, who grew up in Wythenshawe, is the latest recruit to start their career on the project, which is the largest investment ever made in Manchester Airport’s history.

MAN-TP will totally transform the UK’s third largest airport, bringing major improvements to the customer experience in the process. It will increase the capacity of Terminal Two by around 150% and deliver a range of new shops and restaurants, creating thousands of jobs in the process. The first phase opened last year, and this summer will see the new terminal extension open.

James secured his new role as a Trainee Construction Manager through a partnership between the Airport, construction partner Laing O’Rourke and the University of Salford.

Following his father into a career in construction was always James’ dream, and having enjoyed a week’s work experience at the Airport while still studying at Loreto College and later at Openshaw College, he found the opportunity to combine the two was too good for him to pass up.

He said: “After finishing my A-Levels, I had wanted to join Laing O’Rourke’s school and college leavers programme and I jumped at the chance to work on the Airport’s transformation scheme. There were other placements on offer, but I knew this was the one I wanted.

“It has been great so far, you learn new things every day and I’m getting really good practical experience to go alongside my studies at Salford.”

James will complete a five-year course with the University of Salford as a participant on Laing O’Rourke’s early talent programme, studying one day per week and spending the other four days working at the Airport site. He will gain a debt-free bachelor’s degree in Construction Management and will be mentored by experienced colleagues who will support his professional growth.

He is the 150^th apprentice to join MAN-TP, with apprentices in more than 35 different trades having started work on the project. Enrolled apprentices are working in areas including civil engineering, plumbing, quantity surveying, shuttering and formwork carpentry, carrying out their studies at institutions across the region such as Manchester College, Trafford College, Salford University and the University of Bolton.

Manchester Airport CEO Andrew Cowan, who started his career as an apprentice electrical engineer, said: “We are thrilled James has found an opportunity that is the right fit for him and wish him every success as he embarks on his chosen career, starting with the opportunity to help build the future of Manchester Airport.

“We’re incredibly proud to have reached that milestone and it demonstrates the palpable benefits of this project in creating new employment opportunities for local people. We would like to thank Laing O’Rourke and our partner universities for their dedication to achieving this vision.

“As well as seeing us employ our 150^th apprentice on site, this year will also see the opening of the terminal extension in the summer. A pivotal moment in the Transformation Project, the terminal extension will make use of the latest technology and offer a host of new food, beverage and retail units.”

The airport’s £1bn Transformation Programme offers substantial apprenticeship opportunities but if construction isn’t for you, there are a range of other apprenticeships across the airport site. The UK’s third largest airport is currently undertaking a £1bn transformation programme that will see an expanded Terminal Two become the focal point of its operations once the works are complete.

To support the shift in its operations, the airport is currently building a dual taxiway system to improve access from its runways to the terminal. The new taxiways will allow two Code E aircraft to pass each other which will improve the efficiency of the operation.

To prepare for the introduction of these new parallel taxiways, christened Echo and Delta, - in 2020, changes have been made to a number of the airfield designators. A team of around 30 from the airport and principal contractor Allied Infrastructure and sub-contractor ATG Airports worked through the night to install 50 new signs on five sections of taxiway, one runway holding position and 11 intermediate hold positions.

Additionally, several painted ground markings were altered, and changes were also made to the airfield lighting and other control software systems, aeronautical and operational charts, publications and databases.

As more facilities come online and further changes are made to the airfield, the new designators will make it easier for pilots and airside drivers to navigate around the airfield. The airport worked in consultation with NATS and the Manchester-based pilot community to develop the strategy for long-term airfield designators.

These changes are the first phase of re-designation. Further stages will take place as the outer taxiway network is developed between 2020 and 2024.

Manchester Airport is spending circa £110M on optimising its airfield. Work-to-date has included the creation of 11 new contact stands and three remote stands on Pier One of Terminal Two that opened in April 2019. In addition to these works, Manchester Airport are also investing in the latest technology such as ‘Airport Collaborative Decision Making’ (ACDM) and advanced ground radar systems. Collectively these investments will drive operational efficiency by reducing congestion and delays.

Next year will see the completion of the airfield’s western apron with 10 new remote aircraft stands and doubling the width of taxiway Zulu, which will become a ‘multi-choice’ taxiway. Using colour coded centrelines, a UK first, it will enable narrow bodied aircraft to push back onto different sides of the cul-de-sac at the same time and taxi past one another without delay.

A further six remote aircraft stands will be reconfigured and upgraded. The newly constructed section of taxiway Echo will also open, which will create a triple-parallel taxiway system running towards the runways.

Rad Taylor, Operations Director at Manchester Airport, said: “The re-designation of the taxiways is a major milestone for the works that are continuing out on the airfield. The changes will really benefit pilots and airfield drivers as more of the programme comes on stream.

“Lots of progress has been made out on the airfield in terms of new stands and taxiways and with more to come it will help improve the efficiency of the operation as our centre of gravity shifts towards Terminal Two.”

Work on the £1bn transformation programme continues at pace. The first passenger pier opened to passengers in April 2019 with the redeveloped terminal building set to open in Summer 2020.

The UK’s third largest airport also released new images and a video to showcase what passengers using the new facilities can expect, when they start using the new terminal from next summer.

New features unveiled include a honeycomb light installation that proudly illuminates the departure lounge. With 16 million settings, it will change colours depending on the time of day.

A new 83 square metre digital screen will take centre stage in the new extension to provide entertainment and information to passengers. There will also be a new children’s play area to help families pass the time before heading on their travels.

New shops will also open in the departure lounge including passenger favourites like JD Sports, WH Smiths and Dixons Travel. Bury-based JD Sports will open its largest ever airport store in the UK. Dozens of new retail outlets will also open when the existing terminal building reopens.

The new announcements come on the back of the news earlier in the year that 15 new food and beverage outlets would open including Manchester favourites like San Carlo Cicchetti, Pot Kettle Black, Archie’s and Barburrito.

The first the phase of the terminal extension is set to open in July 2020. It will see a brand-new security hall, the departure lounge, the immigration hall, arrivals hall and the new bus gate lounge open to passengers.

Once they are up and running, further facilities will start operating during the rest of 2020, including the first of the new ‘island’ check-in desk banks and the new baggage reclaim facilities. As the various elements of the new extension open, the airport will start to close parts of the existing Terminal Two to allow for that area to be reconfigured to align with the new facilities.

The fully reconfigured Terminal Two will open in 2022 with 32 new shops and food and beverage outlets set to feature in that area. The completed Terminal Two will be 150% bigger than the current building once finished.

Pier Two will also open at that time and will be a similar size to Pier One. It will have the capability to handle the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the double-decker A380 and will also include airline lounges. The remaining terminal and airfield infrastructure is due to open in 2024.

Passengers with accessibility requirements have been consulted throughout the development and build of the terminal. Due to their feedback changes have been made to signage and colour schemes. The sunflower room that has proved popular in Terminal One, will also open in the reconfigured terminal in 2022.

The completed extension will achieve BREEAM status of very good for its sustainability credentials. Other environmental developments include fixed electric ground power points on all new stands which mean aircraft don’t have to leave their engines running when parked up. The terminal will also feature a highly efficient combined heat and power system.

As one of the largest construction projects in the North of England £688millon has so far been spent on the project and more than 1,800 people are currently working on the project. More than 300million has been spent with firms in the North West via contracts awarded by the main contractor, Laing O’Rourke.

The first phase of the programme opened in April 2019 with the first passenger pier and a new 3,800 space multi-storey car park.

Manchester Airport today gave passengers a flavour of the future, as it revealed the first wave of food and drink outlets that will feature in the new “super terminal” being built as part of its £1bn transformation.

The list includes a number of iconic brands born-and-bred in the region, as well as a series of popular chains moving into the UK’s third largest airport for the first time.

One of the stalwarts of Manchester’s dining scene – the San Carlo Group – will open its first ever airport venue, with the launch of San Carlo Cicchetti in the extended Terminal Two.

San Carlo operates some of the highest profile restaurants outside of London, with four eateries in Manchester. It has run a Cicchetti within the House of Fraser store, still affectionately known as Kendals, since 2011.

The new departure terminal – set to more than double in size through the largest investment in Manchester Airport’s 81-year history - will also feature The Apiary and Daisy Nook.

The Apiary will offer stunning airfield views and a sustainably sourced British menu and botanical cocktails. The luxury artisan bar and eatery offers delicious breakfasts as well as lunch and dinner menus centred around fantastically exotic and exquisite seasonal flavours.

Meanwhile, Daisy Nook will offer all day dining with a menu focused on healthy and lighter dishes.

There will also be some familiar names for those looking for a grab-and-go option. Manchester favourites Archie’s and Barburrito will have space in the new departure lounge.

Archie’s has been giving Mancunians a taste of America for more than a decade with its burgers, shakes and waffles. It opened its first store on Oxford Road and now has further two in Manchester with outposts in Birmingham and Liverpool.

Barburrito has grown rapidly since it opened its first outlet in Piccadilly Gardens back in 2005. It now has four branches in the city, as well as outlets in Leeds, London, and Sheffield.

Those looking for a coffee hit can enjoy two Mancunian institutions in Grindsmith and Pot Kettle Black. Grindsmith, which was established by local duo Luke Tomlinson and Pete Gibson in 2014 will be located in the arrivals hall.

Pot Kettle Black will offer a brunch and coffee house in the departure lounge. Rugby League players Jon Wilkin and Mark Flanagan set up the business in 2015 and it has outlets in Barton Arcade and Spinningfields.

Two new drinks venues will also open. The Bridgewater Exchange, in partnership with Joseph Holt’s will feature its very own microbrewery, brewing a beer that is unique to Manchester Airport. It will also serve breakfasts, small plates and pub classics.

There is also the Amber Alehouse, in partnership with Seven Bro7hers brewery, which hails from Salford and has risen in popularity in recent years. It has outlets in Salford and Ancoats, with its beer sold at other venues across the region.

The Amber Alehouse will be a modern industrial gastropub focusing on a variety of local craft beers, cask ales and small-batch lagers. The beers are paired with bar food classics with attention given to shared portions and healthy options. All bars offer a full range of low alcohol and alcohol-free drinks.

The airport has revealed the first 15 venues that will open in the new terminal in 2020, with the roster also including a series of popular national chains.

Wagamama, M&S Simply Food, M&S Food to Go, Wrapchic, an Indian and Mexican fusion street food outlet, and Vit, a healthy, all-day fresh juice and food bar will also have a presence at Manchester Airport for the first time.

Alongside those will be passenger favourites such as KFC.

The outlets are being brought forward on a mixture of franchise basis by HMS Host, SSP and TRG and some on a direct basis.

Now, we are bringing the local taste of our craft beer to the newest terminal in Manchester Airport and we want the world to feel part of our family too – Amber Alehouse is the perfect setting for our brew, and we can’t wait to open next year.”

The Rafiq brothers, owners of Archie’s, said: “We are delighted to be bringing the Archie’s brand, menu and experience to Manchester Airport and this will include the addition and development of a breakfast offering which is new and exciting to the business so expect an Archie’s twist on traditional tastes. It has been refreshing that Manchester Airport is delivering successful independent brands as part of its tenant mix strategy which is very much at the forefront of consumer trends.”

A further eight will open in 2022 when the existing Terminal Two reopens after being refurbished. The second phase includes plans for ‘food hall’ style street food stalls.

Details will be released in due course around the new retail outlets and lounges that will open as part of the transformation programme.

The outlets are being brought forward through a mixture of franchise and direct agreements. The franchises are being delivered by HMS Host, SSP and TRG.

Manchester Airport is today celebrating the completion of the first major phase of its £1bn transformation programme.

Passengers flying out of the UK’s third largest airport were this morning welcomed onto a giant new pier, which connects to Terminal 2, for the first time.

The 216m pier – longer than Manchester’s Beetham Tower is tall – provides extensive panoramic views of the airfield and will be used by all airlines currently operating out of T2. The first flights to depart today were both operated by TUI Airways and went to Funchal, Madeira, and Naples, Italy.

To mark the launch, timelapse footage was released showing how the pier has been built from scratch in less than 18 months, along with drone footage captured before the building was opened to the public.

“Having first put a spade in the ground in July 2017, a huge amount of work has gone into getting our new pier and multi-storey car park ready to open today and I would like to thank all of our colleagues and delivery partners for their efforts.”

The new pier was opened at around 4.30am today, with passengers treated to entertainment by the NoTTwins, who featured on Britain’s Got Talent, the Loose Change Buskers who are raising money for Cancer Research, guitarist Jack O’Malley and Christian Marshall a caricaturist to mark the occasion.

Also, attending the celebrations was TUI Airways crew member Caroline Cox from Bolton. She operated on the first flight out of Terminal 2 to Alicante when it opened back in 1993. Having worked for the company for 33 years, her elder son is now following in her foot steps and is a first officer for the airline.

The pier has been built with more than 300 individual panes of glass and is equipped with 11 gates and airbridges, more than 1,400 seats and stylish wayfinding throughout.

The opening marks the next phase of the airport’s transformation programme that will see Terminal 2 become the focal point of its operations. More than 1,750 people are currently working on the project which recently welcomed its 100th apprentice as work gathers pace. Over the coming weeks more and more flights will gradually move over to the new pier as it becomes fully operational.

The next phase of the £1bn transformation is the extension to the existing Terminal 2. Work is well underway and will see the terminal more than double in size. The extension will open in summer 2020 with 40 plus new food and beverage outlets and shops, followed by a further 40 when the existing building is fully refurbished

The project’s design, construction methods and logistics were all planned digitally before construction on the edge of the live airfield began. The £1bn investment in Manchester Airport will provide major improvements to the customer experience with new security halls and the latest technological advancements. Once the Terminal Two extension opens for Summer 2020 the existing building will close for refurbishment with it due to reopen in 2022. Further piers will open in 2022 and 2024.

The opening comes as the airport continues to see passenger numbers continue to grow as it attracts further long-haul routes to likes of Addis Ababa and Seattle. The transformation will ensure the Northern hub can continue to play its role as a global gateway and economic and employment generator, as it plugs the region into key global destinations and widens UK connectivity.

With just four weeks until the first phase of the development opens to passengers, Ross Wainwright, 24, from Stoke, joined the scheme to work for R&H Installations.

Ross decided to do an apprenticeship because he was looking for a career change and is now working on the duct and pipe work across the project.

He said: “My apprenticeship on the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme has helped me to get my foot in the door, providing valuable experience on site whilst being able to learn as I go along.

“The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme is one of the largest construction projects in the North of England, so it is really exciting to be working on it.”

He joins apprentices working on scheme in areas such as engineering, painting and decorating, plumbing and project management. Over the course of the project more than 150 apprentices will be recruited. It comes as the number of people currently working on one of the largest construction projects in the North of England has reached more than 1750.

The transformation programme will see Terminal 2 grow by 150% to become the airport’s main terminal. The first pier and multi storey car park are set to open to passengers from the beginning of April.

“It’s pleasing that as we get closer to the opening of the first phase that work is continuing at pace on the rest of the site and we’re continuing to see more apprentices like Ross getting an opportunity to work on the scheme.”

Manchester Airport already plays a key role as a major employer in Greater Manchester with 23,000 people employed across the campus and a further 25,000 jobs supported indirectly in the region.

Manchester Airport is celebrating three milestones in its £1bn transformation programme.

Firstly, a topping out ceremony was held to mark the extension to Terminal Two reaching its highest point after just more than a year of construction.

The topping out ceremony was attended by some of the apprentices working on the scheme to mark the end of the structural work and aims to bestow good luck on a building.

The terminal is more than doubling in size through the project, which will make it one of the busiest in Europe.

Secondly, a 45m, 85 tonne bridge that will connect the terminal extension with the new multi-storey car park was lifted into place. It took four days and two cranes to install the link, which will open to passengers when the extension opens in 2020.

Time-lapse footage of the installation was today released to bring to life the scale and complexity of the process.

Finally, the main structural work has also been completed on the car park building and will be fully completed by the middle of next year.

The milestone celebrations were shared with apprentices who are working on the transformation – the biggest investment in Manchester Airport’s 80 year history – and local businesses that have secured contracts as part of it.

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: “It is exciting to mark these milestones as they demonstrate how much progress has been made on our transformation programme since starting work just more than a year ago.

“Hopefully this gives our customers an appreciation of how soon they will be able to start making use of these new state-of-the-art facilities.

“This scheme will be transformational, not just in terms of the buildings being created, but the experience we will be able to deliver to passengers and airlines.

“It is also making a major contribution to skills and employment in the region and that is why it was great to share the occasion with many of the people who are working on the project.”

The topping out ceremony was attended by some of the apprentices working on the scheme to mark the end of the structural work and aims to bestow good luck on a building. They included Sally Plum, Apprentice Civil Engineer; Emma Coates, Pipe Fitter Apprentice and Ben Jackson, Office Manager Apprentice.

And it was déjà vu for one company taking part in the celebrations. William Hare, from Bury, erected the steelwork for the original Terminal Two building that opened in 1993.

Now, 25 years on, the company has also erected the steelwork for the extended Terminal Two building and pier link, after being awarded the contract by the main construction partner for the project, Laing O’Rourke.

There has been around 9,100 pieces of steelwork installed on the extension and once complete it will be more than 86,000 square metres. The extension is set over five floors and will see 844 glass panels installed to provide passengers with panoramic views of the airfield.

Work will now commence to make the building water-tight, before fitting out for passengers to use from 2020. It will have an extra 60 retail and F&B units for passengers to enjoy. As well as high street retailers, the airport is keen to have a wide range of independent and local brands.

Building work on the programme started in July 2017 after a visit by the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling. It’s one of the biggest construction programmes in the North of England and there are currently more than 1,300 people working on site – including 90 apprentices in various trades.

As the project reaches its peak at the beginning of next year that number is expected to raise to nearly 1,500 people working on site with a target of 150 apprentices. The scheme is also benefiting local suppliers and SMEs across the North West. Since the first spade went in the ground £220m has been spent with the supply chain within a 35 mile radius of the airport, many of whom are SMEs.

Bryan Glass Laing O’Rourke’s Programme Director said: “We began construction works last summer, so to see the main structures of the multi-storey car park and new terminal extension reach their highest points – with a link bridge successfully installed over the weekend is incredible. It’s testament to the hard work of all the skilled construction and engineering professionals working every day out on site, to our supply chain, consultant partners and of course to our client, Manchester Airport.”

The first pier is set to open in April 2019 and will shortly start to undergo operational readiness trials.

Work has also been progressing on the airfield to help maximise the terminal capacity. In the first phase of airfield works, the apron has been extended to the west by Galliford Try to include new taxiways and aircraft stands around the new pier.

The second phase, which began in June 2018 involves a new taxiway, increasing the capacity of existing taxiways, new aircraft stands and AGL replacement and installation and is part of the reconfiguration of the airfield that will help to feed the redeveloped Terminal Two.

Looking further ahead, after the terminal extension the next pier is scheduled to open in 2022 and the refurbishment of the existing Terminal Two building will also be completed that year. Terminal One is currently scheduled to close by 2023 with the third pier set to open in 2024. The fully redeveloped terminal will be capable of handling 45 million passengers in 2024.

Manchester Airport is marking one year of construction on the biggest investment project in its history by releasing stunning images showing the work completed so far.

The North’s global gateway is spending £1bn on transforming the airport, that will see Terminal 2 become 150% bigger than it currently is and become the focal point of the airport’s operations.

It today released time-lapse footage showing how the project has progressed over the past 12 months and a new video tour that gives passengers the chance to glimpse into the airport’s future.

The programme got under way a year ago after a visit by the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling. Since then, the airport’s skyline has changed dramatically as the first pier has been built and over 70% of the steelwork has been erected on the terminal extension.

It’s one of the biggest construction programmes in the North of England and there are currently 1,200 people working on site – including 80 apprentices, in trades ranging from plumbing and scaffolding to quantity surveying and civil engineering. At the peak of the project, at the beginning of 2019, it is expected that nearly 1,500 people will be working on site with a target of 150 apprentices.

Since the first spade went in the ground, £185m has been spent with SMEs in the supply chain within a 35-mile radius of the airport.

So far on the project, on the terminal extension and pier:

• 14,500 pieces of steel have been installed
• More than 6,700 components such as precast concrete delta beams, wall panels, and mega-risers have been manufactured offsite ready for on-site assembly
• More than 41,000m3 of concrete have been placed
• 1,745 miles of cable have been placed

Whilst out on the airfield:

• Over 35,000sqm of lean mix and pavement quality concrete (PQC) has been placed, the equivalent of five football pitches
• A further 55,000sqm of pavement quality concrete will be laid in the first phase
• Around 10,000m of ducts for Aeronautical Ground lights (AGL) and power have been constructed
• The first airfield stands were handed back in May and June

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: “This is the largest investment ever made in the airport and will transform the experience for our passengers and airlines alike, as well as creating job and training opportunities for local people and boosting businesses working on the scheme in the process.

"I’m excited to see the first pier open to passengers in just eight months' time and to press ahead with the rest of the scheme, especially the new terminal building, which is in course to be open to passengers by mid-2020.

“Walking around the site, you really get a scale for how big the project is and the benefits its delivering for not only people securing jobs on the site but also the companies from across the North working on the scheme."

The first pier is set to open to passengers in April 2019. At 216m long if it was stood upright it would be the tallest building in Manchester. The terminal extension is on course to open in 2020.

To enable the new pier and terminal extension to be constructed, work has also been progressing on the airfield. In the first phase of airfield works, the apron has been extended to the west; including new taxiways and apron reconfiguration to allow the pier and additional aircraft stands to be used.

The second phase, which began in June 2018 involves a new taxiway, increasing the capacity of existing taxiways, new aircraft stands and AGL replacement and installation and is part of the reconfiguration of the airfield that will help to feed the redeveloped Terminal 2.

These phases of the works will see 148,000m2 of new taxiway and apron, 95,000m3 of concrete poured and 25miles of cabling installed with the aim of all excavated material being diverted from landfill throughout. The work is due to be completed by July 2020.

Looking further ahead, after the terminal extension the next pier is scheduled to open in 2022 and the refurbishment of the existing Terminal 2 building will also be completed that year. Terminal 1 is currently scheduled to close by 2023 with the third pier set to open in 2024. Once completed, Terminal 2 will have capacity to handle over 35 million passengers a year.

The time-lapse footage released shows how the project has developed from the initial works that saw a temporary gate lounge being built to the building of the pier and steelwork for the terminal extension being erected. Whilst the new video tour shows how the pier and terminal extension currently look and show case how they will look when open to passengers using the latest CGIs.

Bryan Glass, Laing O'Rourke Project Director, said: “We’re on schedule to deliver the transformation of Terminal 2 and that certainty of delivery has been driven by our offsite construction approach, with elements of the project manufactured offsite and assembled by our expert project team and technicians. The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has visited Manchester Airport’s £1bn transformation programme to mark the 80th apprentice starting work on site.

During a tour of the project’s construction site, the Mayor also met with small and medium-sized companies from around Greater Manchester that are benefitting from being awarded contracts to deliver the scheme.

Tom Bedford, 18, Salford, is working for Bedford Fabrications as a Fabricator/Welder and became the project’s 80th apprentice, just a month after the UK’s third largest airport turned 80 itself. Over the course of the project – the largest investment in the airport’s history – more than 150 apprentices will be recruited.

It comes as the number of people currently working on one of the largest construction projects in the North of England reached more than 1,000. Of those, 72% are from within a 35 mile radius. And the latest data shows that since the first spade went in the ground, £188m has been spent with SMEs in the supply chain, of which £132m has gone to firms in Greater Manchester. This includes William Hare’s, from Bury, that fabricated the steelwork that has been used on the pier and terminal extension in a contract worth £28million.

Meanwhile, for one business, the award of the contract for the cladding of the pier and terminal extension has led to them setting up a Manchester office. Prater has now established a base in Cheadle to service their North West clients, including Manchester Airport.

Mr Burnham met with representatives from Prater during his tour, as well as apprentices Emma Coates and Keel Parker.

Emma, 34, of Bollington, Cheshire, had worked for years in retail but wanted to try a new trade and jumped at the opportunity to work on the project as an apprentice heating and ventilation craftsperson. She hopes her story will inspire others that people from a range of backgrounds can successfully change careers and pick up new skills.

Keel, 21, of Swinton, Salford, is learning a range of scaffolding skills as part of his apprenticeship, which he will take onto other jobs in the region after working on the airport transformation.

Mr Burnham said: “Manchester Airport is a massive asset to our city region, connecting those living and working here to more global destinations than ever before, as well as helping attract visitors and tourists in the other direction.

“The investment it is making will further enhance Greater Manchester’s international credentials and make a major contribution to placing the city region at the heart of a prosperous Northern economy.

“What is great to see is that the project is also doing a huge amount to create employment for people from all backgrounds and providing training that will ensure it leaves a skills legacy for future generations.

“The fact so many Greater Manchester businesses are working on the airport’s transformation, creating and sustaining jobs in the process, can only be good news for our economy.”

Rob Stewart, Programme Delivery Director for MAN-TP, said: “This is the largest ever investment in Manchester Airport. As well as transforming the airport and the customer experience it’s also great to see that the project is having a hugely positive impact on the lives of people who are able to secure jobs on site and to many firms across Greater Manchester who are delivering various aspects of the scheme.”

After the tour, the Mayor visited the Good Mood Food canteen which is located on the construction site for workers. The café is run by Laing O’Rourke in conjunction with Manchester MIND, a mental health charity. As well as usual favourites, it also offers a healthier menu and encourages good wellbeing with 10 per cent of profits going to Manchester MIND.

It’s the largest ever investment in Manchester Airport with £1bn being spent to create a world class gateway for Manchester and the North of England. Companies from around Greater Manchester are already feeling the benefits of the programmes having been awarded a number of lucrative contracts to work on the scheme.

As well as transforming the transport hub for all of the North, Manchester Airport continues to add a wealth of long haul destinations that outside of London can only be found at the Northern gateway. In recent years it has added San Francisco, Boston, Beijing and Muscat, with Mumbai and Addis Ababa starting later this year.

The building of Taxiway Delta Echo, as the new taxiway will be called, is the start of the reconfiguration of the airfield at the UK’s third largest airport to help feed the redeveloped Terminal 2.

The works will see 80,000m2 of new taxiway and apron, 40,000m3 of concrete poured and sixteen miles of cabling installed with the aim of all excavated material being diverted from landfill throughout. The work is due to be completed by July 2020.

Galliford Try will deliver the taxiway works as part of the Airfield Phase 2 Design and Build Contract awarded in December 2017. Jacobs are providing MAG with client Project and Programme Management support services for the full airfield scope of the transformation programme.

Once finished, it will improve aircraft access to the new terminal, leading to reduced taxi times and reducing the amount of fuel they burn. The works will be the biggest changes to the airfield since Runway 2 came into operation in 2001.

More than a dozen businesses involved in the £1bn transformation of Manchester Airport have signed a pledge to recruit apprenticeships to work on the project.

A target of 150 apprenticeships has been written into principal contractor Laing O’Rourke’s Legacy Agreement on the scheme - designed to ensure it leaves a lasting positive impact on local people and the economy.

So far, 34 apprentices are working on the project, all of whom are from the Greater Manchester area. In addition, 69% of the entire workforce on the project live within a 35-mile radius of the site, and 76% of subcontractors working on the transformation are based within a 35-mile radius.

Work on the scheme will ramp up over the summer period, with more and more suppliers winning work on the project. A special apprenticeships event has been staged and aimed to ensure that new businesses joining the team are aware of the benefits apprenticeships can bring to their business, their importance on this particular project and to offer support and guidance on how they can recruit apprentices.

Representatives from Trafford College Group were on hand to provide their expertise and a group discussion was held to consider what the opportunities and potential barriers employers may face when recruiting apprentices. Attendees were also given details of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s shared apprenticeship scheme.

The first major phase of the £1bn transformation of Manchester Airport was today completed, as the project marked the six-month milestone.

Two apprentices who have been recruited to the scheme tightened the final bolt on the steel framework; connecting one of the new airport piers to the Terminal Two extension for the first time.

Stunning footage showing how the building work has progressed since the launch of the scheme by The Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP in July 2017, was also released to mark the milestone.

Manchester Airport CEO, Andrew Cowan, joined Bryan Glass, Programme Director, from Laing O’Rourke and apprentices, Elektra Politis, 22, Denton and Holleeann Walker, 19, Beswick, who both gained employment on the programme with construction partner Laing O’Rourke in Autumn 2017.

They tightened the final steel bolt in the first new pier of the transformation programme, which is set to see Terminal Two grow by more than 140% and offer the latest innovations in travel. Passengers will be able to use the new pier from next summer.

Andrew Cowan said: “Today is one of the major milestones for our £1bn transformation programme, which is gathering pace at a rapid rate.

“As you can see from Elektra and Holleeann being here today, not only are we building an airport for the future, but we are creating jobs and acting as an economic stimulus for the region and beyond.

“Through the delivery of the transformation we will have a world class airport the whole of the North can be proud of, and one that will attract new airlines and routes so that we can continue to play economic provider by linking the North to key investment and trade opportunities across the globe.”

Bryan Glass said: “We’re delighted with the progress we have made on site so far. Today marks the pier and the pier link building coming together for the first time, which is a huge milestone for the team. In a little over a year, passengers will be taking off and landing from this building and it’s from up here you get a real sense of just how large the project is.

“Having spent a few months demolishing, piling and laying foundations, we’ve recently started on the terminal extension superstructure and the new multi storey car park. Around 90% of the multi storey car park will be built using our innovative offsite construction methodology, enabling us to build faster, more safely and to a higher quality.

“I’m also delighted that the project is having such a positive effect on the local community, with 52% of our workforce coming from the local area and with apprentices like Holleeann and Elektra starting out their careers with us on this prestigious project.”

After being officially launched by the Secretary of State the transformation quickly delivered a new gate lounge which seats 650 people and has been used by airlines including Virgin Atlantic and TUI.

With the demolition works now largely complete and foundations laid, focus is now shifting to the construction of the new Terminal Two extension and multi storey car park, with four tower cranes erected to aid the process, and two more to be installed before the end of March, creating a dramatic skyline to the construction site.

The project ended 2017 by launching a pre-employment programme in partnership with Laing O’Rourke and the airport’s onsite education academy, to find and train the workforce of the future to work on one of the largest construction projects the North has seen. The first cohort in December saw three people gain placements with Laing O’Rourke, and additional cohorts will follow in their footsteps as the project continues.

As part of Laing O’Rourke’s commitment to investing in future talent, 150 apprenticeships will be created or sustained during the project. One of the apprentices recruited specifically for the project, Holleeann Walker, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be working on such a high profile, worthwhile project that will transform transport infrastructure here in the North West.

“Since coming onto the programme I have learnt so much and developed many skills that will set me in good stead for the remainder of my working life.

“I hadn’t really considered construction before applying for the apprenticeship, but I have always been quite creative with my hands and so I decided that joinery would be a good option. I’m really enjoying it and I’m learning so much. It’s a huge project and my dad actually did the landscaping around Terminal Two when it was first built, so it is a real coincidence that I am starting out my career at the airport too."

As the scheme continues the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme will see many more milestones come to fruition including the full handover of the first pier, the construction of the second, changes to the highways and Terminal Two forecourt and the creation of a new baggage hall to service the vast new Terminal Two extension. By 2019 passengers will start to experience the new facilities first hand with the opening of the first pier.

Elektra Politis, 22, Denton

Elektra was the first apprentice to join the Laing O’Rourke team on the project, joining in early August 2017. She is studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration and is visited by an assessor every 2-3 weeks. She is set workplace assessments she needs to complete in set times, and logs all the experience she is gaining in order to evidence her learning on the project.

“I’m really enjoying it! It’s so different to what I used to do and I love how close to the action we are. Where I sit, I get a great view of the site and we have a lot of interaction with the construction team. It’s a really good atmosphere and it’s a huge project. Being from the area, I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

“I’d never considered construction as a career path but I think I’ve really found my feet. I’m getting so much experience in so many different areas from logistics to health and safety to site inductions. I also helped to organise the move into our new site offices, which I enjoyed.”

Holleeann Walker, 19, Beswick

Holleeann is an apprentice joiner and formworker, and has been heavily involved in the construction of the new airport pier. After finishing her A-Levels at Connell Sixth Form College, Holleeann was unsure about going to university and instead decided to look into apprenticeships. Holleeann spends the majority of the time on site, but travels to a specialist CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) facility in Norfolk for three-week-long training courses where she learns a variety of skills in steelwork, woodwork and other trades.

“I hadn’t really considered construction before applying for the apprenticeship, but I have always been quite creative with my hands and so I decided that joinery would be a good option. I’m really enjoying it and I’m learning so much. It’s a huge project and my dad actually did the landscaping around terminal 2 when it was first built, so it is a real coincidence that I am starting out my career at the airport too."

An 18 year old construction pro, a sports-mad plasterer and an aviation studies student are among the first people to land a job working on the transformation of Manchester Airport.

Work started on the £1bn project - the largest infrastructure scheme in the North - earlier this year, with 1,500 new jobs set to be created.

The Airport’s on-site academy joined forces with main contractor Laing O’Rourke to deliver a specially-tailored course for those wanting to work on the scheme.

Now, the first cohort of students, who range in age, background and experience, have secured roles working on the transformation and will start on site in the New Year. All live locally and were out of full-time work before being given the opportunity.

Overseeing the graduation was Manchester Airport’s CEO Andrew Cowan, who said: “Our investment in Manchester Airport will give the North the world class international gateway it deserves.

“But it will also do a huge amount to boost the regional economy by creating jobs, tackling local unemployment and driving up skill levels, ensuring the transformation leaves a lasting legacy.

“That is why it is pleasing to see the first wave of people fill newly-created roles on the project and I congratulate them on passing their course and securing a job with Laing O’Rourke.

“This is just one example of the many initiatives we have on site for people to gain access to employment across the entire airport campus.

“With construction progressing rapidly, there will be many more opportunities for people to train in the skills they need to play a part in creating a bigger and better Manchester Airport.”

The Rt Hon Mike Kane MP said: “It is great to see the investment Manchester Airport is making is bringing real benefits to the area by creating jobs for local people, especially those who have been out of work for whatever reason.

“Many people in my constituency grow up aspiring to work at the airport and it is hugely positive to see schemes like this making that a reality for them.

“I wish all the graduates well with their careers and look forward to seeing the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme progress in the weeks and months ahead.”

Bryan Glass, Project Director from Laing O’Rourke said: “I congratulate the graduates on completing their course.

“The projects that we deliver have an impact on the local economy that goes beyond physical construction. By working with the Airport Academy, we are able to support local people back into work that lead to sustainable and fulfilling careers while also creating a pool of talent to complete the Transformation Programme.”

A dozen students started the inaugural three-week course, which covers a range of modules designed to help in the construction industry. These include: health and safety, team building, time management, manual handling, working at height and dust awareness to name a few.

The students are from all walks of life, aging from 18-50 and coming from places including Wythenshawe, Northenden, Cheadle and Baguley (see case studies below). A pre-requisite to take part includes passing literacy and numeracy at Entry Level Three. Plus, applicants need to be at least 18, in receipt of an active benefit e.g. Job Seekers Allowance and a resident in the EU for at least three years.

Those graduates successful in securing a role will be introduced to general construction, giving them a chance to better familiarise themselves with the opportunities available throughout the industry.

Minstrell Recruitment has been involved alongside the Airport Academy and Laing O’Rourke. Any graduates who are unsuccessful at interview stage with Laing O’Rourke will immediately be registered and offered temporary work with one of its ‘Recruitment Arm’ clients. They are able to provide an integrated service offer from screening, selection and training through to the placement of candidates onto other local construction/infrastructure projects.

Launched by The Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP work officially started this summer on Manchester Airport’s Transformation Programme (MANTP).

This project, the largest private investment in the region, will reinforce Manchester Airport’s standing as the UK’s global hub in the North of England, enabling better and more international connections and supporting economic growth across the North.

MANTP will provide millions of passengers and airlines with facilities that combine state of the art services with excellent customer service. With the new development complete, the airport will be able to grow alongside a thriving northern economy to handle 45 million passengers a year, an increase of almost 20 million compared to today.

Manchester Airport is already amongst the world’s top 15 best connected airports by destinations served and this investment will facilitate ever greater levels of trade and investment into the UK that will drive a rebalancing of economic growth across the country.

In recent years, the airport has become the only airport outside London to offer many direct routes to long haul destinations like Seattle, Beijing, San Francisco, Houston and Muscat.

MANTP will enable the airport to further improve the North’s international connectivity and the airport is currently targeting expanding its route network into North America, the Gulf, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Manchester Airport estimates that MANTP will create more than 1500 jobs in the construction phase alone, nearly 200 of which will be apprentices. Manchester Airport already plays a key role in the Northern Powerhouse, generating £5 billion every year in economic activity in the local and regional economy, employing 20,000 people on site and supporting a further 25,000 jobs indirectly.

The Airport Academy aims to help unemployed people to get jobs in the travel trade, with training provided by tutors from Stockport College designed around skills needed for roles within an airport environment. One of the first projects of its kind in the world, the initiative has helped 1,200 out-of-work people in Greater Manchester into employment since it was launched by Manchester Airport in 2012.

Instead of using the ramp at the front of the building, from 00:01 passengers are being asked to drop off at the ground level in a specially commissioned forecourt.

Works began this summer on the £1bn MAN-TP, which will deliver a world-class customer experience and state of the art facilities at the UK’s third biggest airport.

Through 2019/20, passengers will see major changes to the airport, with Terminal Two growing by 160% and offering the latest technological advances in travel, and a wealth of new retail and food and beverage outlets.

A Manchester Airport spokesman said: “As we look to transform Manchester Airport through our £1bn development, we have made some changes to the drop off area at Terminal Two.

“From 19^th October we are asking customers to drop off at the ground level, before using lifts to access the departure level. Drop off remains free of charge.

“We want all passengers to have a smooth and stress-free experience, so we will have marshals and traffic signs in place to help passengers find their way. We have also been posting helpful information on social media to pre-warn people.”

The ‘We are changing’ campaign comes after construction work on Terminal Two started this summer at the UK’s third largest airport.

The transformation programme will see Terminal Two more than double in size creating 60 new units in over 167,000sqft of retail space. With more than 27 million passengers and continued growth, the airport is looking to fill the space with a range of new Food & Beverage and retail outlets.

As well as high street retailers, the airport is keen to have a wide range of independent and local brands. With retail units to suit all sizes, a new market area is also proposed for pop-up food stalls and smaller independent F&B outlets.

Two industry events will be held in Manchester in November. One will be held for existing retail partners on the 14^th November whilst on the 21^st November the airport is inviting interested retailers to meet the team and find out more about the exciting opportunities the development will offer. The event will be held at the Midland Hotel between 11am and 3pm.

Manchester Airport has unveiled the first part of its £1bn transformation programme as the summer holiday season comes to an end.

Some passengers passing through Terminal 2 will now use a new temporary gate lounge that can hold up to 650 passengers. The first passengers used the lounge this week and after successful trials, more flights will now use the facility. It will be in operation for up to two years and the wraps have been taken off the new building a little over a month after work on the project began. 

The first two passengers Mr and Mrs Raistrick were jetting off to Rhodes with Monarch Airlines and were rewarded with a VIP airport experience for their next holiday.

The new gate lounge will allow the west half of Terminal 2 to be completely demolished and rebuilt whilst the airfield remains in full operation. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by 2019.

Thanks to ceiling high windows, the new lounge provides passengers with a close-up view of the airfield. The facility has also been decorated with a timeline that tells the history of the airport as well as information on the transformation programme.

The area also sees new enlarged toilet cubicles and new wayfinding branding including signage that will be replicated throughout the terminal once the transformation programme is complete.

The opening of the new lounge comes a month after a visit from the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP to see the start of the works. As well as launching the airport’s transformation, he also launched the UK’s national aviation strategy where he positioned Manchester as “the UK’s other hub airport.”

Rob Stewart, Delivery Director for MAN-TP, said: “The opening of the lounge is the first milestone for the project since work started. It will allow us to demolish the western side of Terminal 2 and passengers will soon see cranes in place starting those works. The new facility has been finished to a high standard and it is great to use the space to tell passengers travelling to destinations ranging from Beijing to San Francisco about the history of Manchester Airport and our plans for the future.

"Excitement is really building about the changes taking place at the airport and we are looking forward to seeing it develop in the weeks and months ahead.”

The first part of the transformation programme comes after the airport’s busiest ever Bank Holiday Weekend, with more than 420,000 passengers passing through the terminals over the three days.

"The time is now" for Government to truly throw its weight behind the Northern Powerhouse vision.

That was the message today delivered by Manchester Airport chief executive Ken O'Toole, as he unveiled the next phase of its £1bn Transformation Programme.

Mr O'Toole said the airport is pressing ahead with the investment in recognition of the strength of the Northern economy and the potential for hundreds of thousands of jobs to be created in the coming years.

Delivering the opening speech at the UK Northern Powerhouse Conference in Manchester city centre, Mr O'Toole said public and private sector leaders from across the North had ensured the Northern Powerhouse project maintained momentum over the past year.

That included Manchester Airport launching direct flights to key markets like Beijing, Houston, Los Angeles and Boston, as well as progressing with its £1bn Transformation Project, the largest private sector investment in the North.

Mr O'Toole said a clear case had been made for investment in infrastructure projects like Northern Powerhouse Rail (HS3), which has the potential to transform the Northern economy by dramatically improving connectivity between the North's leading cities and Manchester Airport.

But he urged Ministers to make a clear commitment to the scheme to show the Government is serious about creating a thriving and internationally competitive Northern Powerhouse.

He said: "If the Northern Powerhouse is to be truly competitive on the global stage, it should be as easy as possible to travel from Hull to Hong Kong; Liverpool to Los Angeles and Sheffield to Singapore.

"Slashing journey times through investment in NPR could lead to the North securing direct flights to 20-30 key global markets, with millions more people in easy reach of Manchester Airport.

"It is connectivity like that that will maximize growth in sectors like life sciences, advanced manufacturing, technology and energy. It is connectivity like that that is key to delivering an Industrial Strategy that rebalances the UK economy.

"Northern Powerhouse Rail could give us that connectivity and drive transformational improvements in productivity and growth."

Mr O'Toole said it was clear 2017 was going to be a "very important year for the North" in terms of the need for Government support.

He added: "We have the plan – the time is now for Government to commit to it, starting in just a few weeks’ time with the Budget."

Mr O'Toole also told delegates the the Government must seize the opportunity presented by the creation of a new national aviation policy this year to ensure that airports across the UK maximise their potential to link the UK to the world's most important markets.

That will not be achieved unless road, rail and aviation policies are joined-up, he said, adding that strong international connectivity is key to the success of the Government's new Industrial Strategy.

Mr O'Toole said unlocking the potential of airports like Manchester was key to creating a "truly global Britain," especially in the 10-15 years it will take to build a new runway at Heathrow.

And he told the conference there were short term measures Government could take to demonstrate Britain was "open for business," such as the reform of aviation taxes, border and visa policies.

He was speaking as Manchester Airport unveiled a host of new images showing what it could look like following its £1bn investment.

He added: "We know we are among the best airports in the world when it comes to the number of different destinations on offer, whether that be Boston, Beijing or Barcelona; Houston, Hong Kong or Hamburg. 

"Our £1bn Transformation Programme is all about investing in the future, so we can continue to grow by securing more direct flight services in our role as the North's global gateway. It also about investing in our facilities and in the latest technology to provide passengers with best possible experience. 

“These new images showcase the look, feel and quality that will be delivered by the Transformation Project, which is one of the largest private sector investments in the North of England in decades. 

“We’ve made a massive private investment commitment, which clearly shows ours ambition for the Northern Powerhouse to succeed, and now we call upon Government to match that through delivering on key infrastructure schemes.”
