The Sainsbury’s Local, located in T3 Arrivals, makes Manchester the third UK airport to host a Sainsbury’s store – joining Edinburgh Airport, where Sainsbury’s opened its first airport store in 2024, and London Luton.

The store, which is expected to create 24 jobs, will offer a carefully curated selection of Sainsbury’s great value, high-quality convenience products, from meal deals and food on the go to a wide range of home and kitchen essentials.

The new store will also allow customers to order online from Sainsbury’s much-loved Argos and Habitat brands for collection, providing easy access to thousands of products.

Terminal 3 is currently undergoing a multi-million pound revamp, with a new 400+-seat sports bar opening earlier this year in the Departure lounge and an Italian eatery, Terracotta, set to follow later this year. The terminal has increased in size following the closure of Terminal 1 earlier this year, with some of that terminal’s floorspace annexed into T3.

"The added bonus of being able to collect your Argos or Habitat orders from this store means you can order something while on holiday and pick it up as soon as you arrive back at the airport – or order essentials for your trip and pick them up before you check in for your flight.”

The pub will be named The Belle Vue, in a nod to the city’s historic Victorian showground that housed a pub, zoological gardens, and stadium with a greyhound racing and speedway track. The Belle Vue Stadium was a focal point for social life in the city right up until 2020, when the final event was held at the venue. The area is still home to the National Speedway Stadium, opened in 2016, as part of the Belle Vue Sports Village.

The design of the 338 sqm pub in the Terminal 2 Departures lounge, which will have more than 300 covers, is inspired by the history of Belle Vue and the sporting culture of the North West of England.

Artistic impressions of the space show a clubhouse style design with a blend of classic and modern features, complete with sports memorabilia adorning the walls.

The Belle Vue will become the final major food and drink venue to open its doors as part of the airport’s decade-long, £1.3bn transformation of Terminal 2. The programme has seen the terminal more than double in size and win a prestigious UNESCO-backed architecture award, with a blend of high street names and Northern brands taking up residence in its departure lounge.

What really gives the terminal its Northern Soul, however, is the variety of local brands serving up a taste of Manchester in the bars and restaurants that have opened up in the extended terminal. Earlier this year, coffee chain Grindsmith became the latest in a growing list of local names taking up residence in the terminal, opening their new unit in partnership with WHSmith.

The Great Northern Market, which opened in February and brings the market hall street food concept to the airport for the first time, is also packed with Northern flavour.

Here we look at the brands from Manchester and the wider North that have helped shape the award winning, and distinctly Mancunian, passenger experience that the new terminal has to offer.

Amber Alehouse by Seven Bro7hers

They already run several successful bars in the city, but the Amber Alehouse marked Salford microbrewery Seven Bro7hers’ first foray into airport hospitality. It has proven so successful following its opening in 2021 that the gastropub has now expanded to take on additional space in the extended Terminal 2, as part of the second phase of the terminal’s 10-year, £1.3bn transformation programme. A creative menu ranging from light bites to pub grub and global flavours is complemented by Seven Bro7hers’ famous beers, and nods to Manchester’s music scene in its Hacienda-inspired design – and playlist.

Archie’s

Smash burgers are in vogue and brands like Archie’s helped set the trend. It opened its first unit in Manchester in 2010 and its inventive burger menu and distinctive bright pink décor won around a legion of online followers and celebrity fans, from Rita Ora to Kevin Hart. Its T2 unit has views across the airfield and opened as part of the first phase of the terminal’s transformation programme.

Barburrito

A Northern success story more than two decades in the making, Barburrito was the UK’s first burrito bar when it opened its doors in Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens in 2005. That store remains open to this day and has been joined by more than a dozen others across the country. Its T2 location means you can choose from its range of burrito bowls, or select from a range of fillings and load up your burrito, before your next flight.

Great Northern Market – Gooey, Yard & Coop

With more than 470 covers, the Great Northern Market is the largest eatery in the airport’s expanded Terminal 2 – and as the name suggests, it has a decidedly Northern influence. The kitchens in the food hall will rotate, but among the names involved at the outset are the Northern Quarter’s donut and cookie favourite Gooey. The team behind fried chicken brand Yard & Coop helped craft the menu in the Nashville Hot House kitchen, while Manchester-born Executive Chef, Amy Tomkinson and Merseyside-born Chef, Sam Grainger have curated other menus.

Grindsmith

Grindsmith was established by local duo Luke Tomlinson and Pete Gibson in 2014 and its Media City location became renowned across the city, leading to the establishment of a chain of coffee houses. Manchester Airport passengers are now able to enjoy their range of expertly crafted coffees using ethically sourced beans locally roasted in Ancoats.

Joseph Holt (The Bridgewater Exchange)

Joseph Holt brewery was founded almost 200 years ago – well before the first aircraft took to the sky – but the brand’s Bridgewater Exchange brewpub in T2 has taken off. It’s the only UK airport pub to brew beer on site, and its menu is crammed with traditional Northern grub like steak and ale pie and Manchester tarts, along with Northern twists on global cuisine.

Pot Kettle Black

The brainchild of two former professional rugby league players, Jon Wilkin and Mark Flanagan, Pot Kettle Black aims to replicate the chic independent coffee scene of Sydney that Mark experienced in his playing days and bring it to Manchester. Its first coffee house opened in Barton Arcade in 2014 and ‘PKB’ is now a chain with three permanent locations across the city, including one in T2 Departures.

San Carlo

Sophisticated Sicilian eatery San Carlo opened its first unit in Birmingham in 1992 but has become synonymous with the North, with restaurants in Liverpool, Leeds, Alderley Edge and no fewer than six in Manchester, which are renowned for their fresh modern feel and influencer-friendly backdrops as well as authentic Italian eats. Their Manchester Airport unit is in T2, on the mezzanine level.

Manchester Airport’s ongoing project to expand and enhance Terminal 3 has taken a huge step forward with the opening of a new space including a 470-seat sports bar.

The new bar, Sporting Chance, has opened in a section of Terminal 3 that was previously occupied by private lounges and a viewing area. 

Sporting Chance features 69 television screens that will show a wide range of sporting events – including some screens in booths that can be controlled by guests – a huge food menu and panoramic views of the airfield from one of the airport’s best vantage points.

The development is part of a programme of improvement to Terminal 3, which has been enabled by the airport’s £1.3bn investment into Terminal 2, which has seen it double in size and become the beating heart of the airport.

The wider project has allowed for Terminal 1 – the airport’s oldest section – to close because Terminal 2 can now cater for around 75% of the airport’s overall traffic.

It leaves just Ryanair operating from Terminal 3 – and as terminals 1 and 3 are linked it means Terminal 3 can expand into space that was previously part of Terminal 1.

The opening of Sporting Chance is just one part of the work to improve Terminal 3. A new entrance and security hall that makes use of space from Terminal 1 has already opened and further new spaces and facilities will open in due course.

“Sporting Chance is a fantastic new bar – perfect for watching your favourite team before your flight, eating a great meal or just enjoying a spectacular view – but it’s also in a whole new area for most passengers adding more seats and space to the terminal.

“It means even passengers who don’t use the bar will be able to enjoy the extra space and capacity in the Terminal. I’m looking forward to sampling the bar myself and hearing people’s feedback.”

The opening of Sporting Chance means another bar, the Lion and Antelope, will close. The Lion and Antelope occupies a central space in the terminal so its closure will open up more capacity for passengers.

More than three quarters of the airport’s passengers are now using the new T2 facilities. The final touches to the new-look Terminal 2 are expected to be complete in time for the summer.

Great Northern Market in the airport’s new, £1.3bn Terminal 2 features six street food style kitchens alongside cookies and donuts from Gooey. The kitchens are all set around a central dining area, meaning groups of people can order from different places and still eat together.

Initial options include;

-          Nashville Hot House, serving buttermilk chicken and other Southern favourites

-          Black Iron Grill, serving smash burgers and loaded fries

-          Kouzina, with Greek and Mediterranean inspired street eats

-          La Casita, offering a variety of Mexican dishes

-          Palms Café, serving pan-Asian dishes

-          Gooey, a Manchester favourite serving coffees, cookies and donuts.

It is its first market hall operation and taps into the growing popularity of food courts offering a range of street eats from across the globe.

Officially opened on 15th January by Fever-Tree co-founder Tim Warrillow and Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport MD, the new bar builds on Fever-Tree’s experience in creating premium bar spaces for travellers, following the launch of the Fever-Tree Bar at Edinburgh Airport in 2022. 

The opening comes as Manchester Airport nears the completion of its £1.3bn transformation programme, with the majority of its 50+ airlines now operating from its brand-new, award-winning Terminal 2. The redevelopment has created a bigger, brighter, more open terminal with an upgraded mix of shops, bars and restaurants, designed to elevate the passenger experience from check-in to take-off. 

A premium, nature-inspired space for travellers 

Located airside in Terminal 2, the new Fever-Tree Bar offers a stylish yet relaxing setting for travellers to unwind before their flight. At its heart is a striking signature Fever-Tree tree installation with the canopy stretching 11 metres above the bar, inspired by the botanical landscapes where the brand sources its ingredients. The design reflects Terminal 2’s modern architecture while reinforcing Fever-Tree’s commitment to quality, craft and exceptional drinking experiences. 

Perfectly paired drinks and small plates 

The menu showcases Fever-Tree’s award-winning mixers, paired with premium spirits from leading local and international distilleries. Travellers can enjoy a carefully curated selection of long mixed drinks, including Gin & Tonics, Highballs, Mules, Spritzes and Palomas. A menu of seasonal small plates is also available, designed to complement the drinks offering and provide a refined pre-flight treat. 

Building on the success of the award-winning Fever-Tree Bar at Edinburgh Airport 

Since opening in 2022, the Fever-Tree Bar at Edinburgh Airport has quickly become a favourite with travellers seeking a premium pre-flight experience. Its success has paved the way for expansion into Manchester Airport, one of the UK’s most important international gateways.

As part of the £1.3bn redevelopment of Terminal 2, the airport is set to open a first-of-its-kind ‘market hall’ style eating area. The Great Northern Market will feature six street-food kitchens set around a central dining area, meaning groups of people can order from different, rotating pop-ups and still eat together.

And now, speaking to the airport’s official podcast Manchester: Your Airport, MAN, airport Retail Director Richard Jackson has confirmed the opening line-up of kitchens.

The first kitchens to open will be:

-          Nashville Hot House, serving buttermilk chicken and other Southern favourites

-          The Black Iron Grill, serving smash burgers and loaded fries

-          Kouzina, with Greek and Mediterranean inspired street eats

-          La Casita, offering a variety of Mexican dishes

-          Palms Café, serving pan-Asian dishes

-          Napoli Street Pizza.

In addition to the six street-food kitchens, which take inspiration from some of Manchester’s finest street eats, Mancunian institution Gooey will also be bringing its assortment of sweet treats to the Great Northern Market, from coffees to cookies and donuts.

“As you can imagine, it’s a very complicated build because we’re not just doing the one kitchen, we’re doing six, but it’s coming along well and we’re really excited to share it with our passengers.”

Due to open in the coming months, the Great Northern Market is one of more than 20 new shops and restaurants opening in T2 as part of the second phase of Manchester Airport’s 10-year, £1.3bn transformation programme, now nearing completion. Earlier this year, a new section of the departure lounge opened that will adjoin the Great Northern Market, housing the likes of LEGO®, Rituals and Joe & The Juice.

Once complete, the project will more than double the size of Terminal 2 and turn it into Manchester Airport’s main centre of gravity, with Terminal 1 set to close.

Taking podcast host Hywel Evans on a behind-the-scenes tour of areas yet to open, Richard shows off some of the other big additions to the terminal’s departure lounge that are yet to come– including a ‘boutique mall’ shopping strip with the likes of Pandora, Jo Malone and Tom Ford.

The football season may only just have started – but Liverpool and Leeds United have already beaten both Manchester United and Manchester City in one important table.

Liverpool’s red home shirt was the most popular football kit bought at Manchester Airport ahead of the new season, followed by Leeds United’s blue away kit.

Manchester United’s iconic red home kit was third most popular followed Liverpool’s white away kit.

Manchester City’s most popular kit was the black away kit – but that was only the sixth most popular shirt overall at Manchester Airport.

Manchester United’s home kit was the most bought shirt at the UK’s global gateway in the North last season – but after a dismal season for the Red Devils, Liverpool have taken the top spot as fans get kitted out for the new campaign and take advantage of lower prices than on the High Street.

The data illustrates the breadth of Manchester Airport’s catchment area. In 2024, more than 2.6m people from Merseyside and almost 2.8m people from West Yorkshire flew from Manchester Airport.

“We know football fans love to wear their colours when they go on holiday and ahead of the new season we saw lots of people getting kitted out in their team’s new shirts in the departure lounge.

“But as always, football springs surprises – we expected a strong performance from Liverpool but outselling both Manchester clubs at their home airport was a shock. And who could have predicted the popularity of the new Leeds away shirt?

“It illustrates Manchester Airport’s status as the UK’s global gateway in the North, with football fans from across the region coming here to take advantage of our route network of more than 200 different destinations served by 50 airlines – as well as the top-of-the-league shopping and dining in our departure lounges.

“The only thing I’m disappointed by is that Blackburn haven’t made the top ten...”

Football shirts are available from branches of JD Sports in both Terminal 1 and the brand-new Terminal 2, which is the centrepiece of Manchester Airport’s decade-long £1.3bn transformation programme, due for completion later this year.     

More than 70 per cent of the airport’s passengers will use the new facilities and Terminal 1 is set to close when the project is completed.

New shops and restaurants are expected to open later this year – including Chanel, Grindsmith by WH Smith, a Fever Tree cocktail and champagne bar, and the Great Northern Market – a food court with a selection of street food options.

The finalised terminal will also include 13 new flexible aircraft stands and boarding gates, currently under construction, and a passageway linking the new security hall with the departure lounge will feature a chandelier installation, paying homage to the much-loved Venetian chandeliers that graced Terminal 1 in the 1980s and 1990s. 

More than 30 million passengers have already travelled through the terminal extension since it opened in 2021, and last year it claimed a prestigious, UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles award recognising its outstanding design.

Manchester Airport has given people a preview of what they will experience when its £1.3bn transformation programme is complete later this year.

The Northern gateway’s 10-year transformation programme will be finished later on this year when its brand-new Terminal 2 opens fully to the public.

The first phase of the programme – an extension that doubled the size of Terminal 2 - opened in 2021 and has already received the prestigious UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles award for architecture and design.

Since then, work to revamp the original part of the building, creating more space for seating, security, shops and restaurants and check-in has been ongoing.

Last year, the airport announced the names of more than 20 new shops, cafes, restaurants and bars will be opening in the new part of the terminal – including a Chanel outlet, LEGO Store, the airport’s first Wetherspoon pub, a Fever-Tree bar and its new Great Northern Market – a dining experience featuring a range of street-food-style kitchens around a central eating area.

Now the airport has shared a first look at what passengers will experience when they use the new terminal via a fly-through video that augments computer generated imagery of parts of the terminal that are under construction with the parts that have been finished to show the full experience.

The video begins in the new check-in area then goes into the security hall, which will be fully equipped with state-of-the-art new scanning equipment. It then turns left and flies upstairs to the international departure lounge before going through a new World Duty Free store.

After that, it goes into the Boutique Mall area – which will be home to high-end brands like Chanel and Fever-Tree – before joining with the section of the terminal that has already opened and features the striking honeycomb light art installation.

At that point the camera turns and passes through what is currently a wall but will be opened out to lead into a high street-style shopping area that will be known as The Avenue. There passengers will find the new LEGO Store, the Great Northern Market, the new JD Wetherspoon pub and more.

“Everyone here at Manchester Airport feels proud to be able to connect the North to the world – and that’s why it’s so exciting for us to finally be able to share this video our passengers, so they can get a preview of what they’ll be able to experience here later on this year.

“Our transformation programme has been 10 years and £1.3bn in the making but now we’re in the final stages of finishing everything off to open it to the public later this year. There’s a huge amount of work going on all over the airport but this video shows that it will all be worth it.

“That work isn’t just limited to Terminal 2 either. We’re modernising our airfield, building a new road to improve access to the new terminal – and we’ll soon be able to say more about some work we’re doing in Terminal 3 too.”

The video fly-through is the latest milestone in the transformation project, which is coming to a conclusion after a decade. In that time, thousands of people have worked on the project – several hundred of whom were apprentices starting out their careers – while an independent report commissioned last year showed around 16,400 extra jobs will be generated by 2040 as a result of the economic activity stimulated by the expansion of the airport and its route network.

More than 35 million passengers have already used the Terminal Two extension – which received the prestigious UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles architecture award in 2023.

Last year, plans were announced to reinstate one of Terminal 1’s iconic chandeliers as part of an art installation. A public competition was held to choose the final design and the winner will be announced soon before it is installed near the security area in the new part of the Terminal.

Flights to Lapland are now underway, and almost 30,000 passengers are expected to travel to one of the region’s four airports – Rovaniemi, Kuusamo, Ivalo and Kittila – between now and the end of December.

Many more will travel through the Northern hub in the run-up to Christmas, taking advantage of its unrivalled route network of over 200 destinations, and travelling for Christmas markets, winter sports trips, or visits to friends and family overseas.

Passengers travelling through the airport in the run-up to Christmas are advised to keep an eye on flight updates from their airline in the days before they travel and plan their journeys to the airport, allowing plenty of time to account for potential delays on the road and rail networks caused by wintry weather. You should aim to arrive two hours before your flight departure time for short-haul flights, or three hours beforehand for long-haul flights.

Passengers will see plenty of seasonal touches on their way through the airport, with a giant 20ft Christmas tree on display in Terminal 2, and decorations also on show in the other terminals. The airport’s ‘Holidays Mode Activated’ campaign is also live, promoting offers and discounts on dozens of stocking fillers, and a number of the hub’s bars and restaurants have special festive menus.

And colleagues at the airport are helping spread the spirit of the season to neighbouring communities through a range of activities, from present giveaways to opportunities to meet Father Christmas.

A Santa’s Grotto in Terminal 1’s free play area, the Little Flyers Zone, will be open until Monday 23^rd December – giving young travellers an opportunity to send off their Christmas lists (and receive a reply) with a Letters to Santa Station. Santa’s elves are on hand throughout the next few weeks and the big man himself will be at the Grotto to greet families on Thursdays and Fridays.

Santa will also be making an appearance on children’s charity Childflight’s annual Search for Santa on Tuesday 10^th December, when 140 children from Manchester embark on an unforgettable adventure. The circular flight will take them over the snow-capped peaks of North Wales, doubling for the North Pole, and sees Santa surprise them mid-flight before returning to Manchester later that afternoon. The event, run in partnership by Manchester Airport and TUI for Childflight, provides an unforgettable experience for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom have either never flown before.

Airport colleagues are also helping Santa out by gathering gifts as part of the airport’s annual MAG Giftmas campaign. Colleagues taking part in the campaign took a bauble from a Christmas tree in the airport’s offices with a suggested present written on it, and then provided that gift to the collection.

These will top up an approximate £3,000 worth of gifts purchased by the airport, and the airport’s senior leadership team will be wrapping these gifts and delivering them to local communities for distribution at community centres, community cafes, care homes, sheltered housing and schools. The scheme aims to ensure that no child or vulnerable person in the communities around the airport goes without a gift to open on Christmas morning.

The airport has also provided local schools with tickets to watch a pantomime at Wythenshawe Forum this week, and has extended invites to a number of community choirs to perform in its terminals throughout the month.

The 22 new units will open next year as the second and final phase of the airport's new Terminal 2 opens to the public.

Highlights include:

-          New luxury retailers, including Chanel, alongside other big names like Pandora, LEGO, WH Smith, and Boots;

-          The Great Northern Market – a 472-seat food hall bringing the best of Manchester’s street food scene to the airport, featuring six international street food kitchens including a Gooey desserts unit;

-          New cafes, bars and restaurants, including Fever-Tree, JD Wetherspoon and Joe And The Juice and Greggs – plus an extension to the popular Amber Alehouse by Salford brewery Seven Bro7hers.

-          A new 2,165sqm World Duty Free store featuring well-known brands like Christian Dior, Gucci, YSL and Charlotte Tilbury and more.

The first phase of the airport’s Terminal 2 opened in 2021 and features local brands like fast-food restaurant Archies, pizza favourites San Carlo, cafe chain Pot Kettle Black and brewpubs by Joseph Holt and Se7en Brothers – as well as a range of airport favourites like Pret A Manger, M&S Food and Starbucks.

 The second phase of the project will be finished by the summer of 2025.

Luxury brands like Chanel and the Fever-Tree bar will be situated in a Boutique Mall, while LEGO, Pandora and Rituals will be located on a high street style shopping strip called The Avenue, which will link up with the existing departure lounge in the section of Terminal 2 that is already open.

Units will showcase the best of the North, through the design of their stores and the range of products on offer.

There will be no shortage of places to grab food and drink, catering for everything from light bites and food on the go, to fine dining. The Great Northern Market will feature a diverse range of world street food options including pizza, Mexican food, noodles and more. The offers will rotate regularly in line with food market trends and customer demand.

The Great Northern market has been created by airport food and drink specialists Airport Retail Enterprises with street food pioneer Dominic Cools-Lartigue. It will be complemented by well-known brands like JD Wetherspoon, Upper Crust, Starbucks, and WHSmith’s Grindsmith Café.

JD Wetherspoon’s pub, its first at Manchester Airport, will feature nods to sporting greats of the North in its decor.

All passengers using Terminal 2 will be able to access its existing range of bars, restaurants and cafes.

World Duty Free, operated by global travel experience player Avolta, will open a new main store offering an extensive range of luxury and beauty brands, premium liquor, food & confectionery, souvenirs and gifts. Avolta will also continue to operate its existing World Duty Free store in the Terminal 2 extension.

A number of smaller World Duty Free Express stores will be situated at other points on the passenger journey through the terminal, giving travellers the chance to grab a bargain at their convenience. Avolta will also operate smaller stores dedicated to premium Estée Lauder Companies brands such as Tom Ford, Jo Malone London and Le Labo.

The announcement of the retail line-up in Terminal 2 is the latest milestone in the transformation project, which is coming to a conclusion after almost a decade. In that time, thousands of people have worked on the project – several hundred of whom were apprentices starting out their careers – while an independent report commissioned last year showed around 16,400 extra jobs will be generated by 2040 as a result of the economic activity stimulated by the expansion of the airport and its route network.

The same research – by York Aviation – revealed that Manchester Airport’s contribution to the Northern economy is expected to soar by nearly 80%, to £6.3bn by 2040 as a result of the full delivery of the transformation programme. A further £2.9bn boost will be triggered through the increased productivity of businesses travelling and trading globally through Manchester over the same period.

More than 30 million passengers have already used the Terminal Two extension – which received a prestigious UNESCO-backed architecture award last November.

Earlier this year, plans were announced to reinstate one of Terminal 1’s iconic chandeliers as part of an art installation, and a link bridge was installed ahead of construction starting on a new pier – the final piece of major new construction on the programme.

The Sculpts, a design business started by a Mancunian couple during the pandemic, marks a huge milestone today, with the opening of a dedicated store in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1. 

Hot on the heels of The Sculpts, Pasta Evangelists is to open its first airport branch in Terminal 2 this autumn. The brand already has a large following on social media – but the Manchester branch will only be their third in the UK and the first outside London. 

The Sculpts is a remarkable success story and we’re really pleased that they’ve chosen Manchester Airport as the site for what will be just their second dedicated store.

The owners of The Sculpts are pledging to give visitors to Manchester the chance to ‘take a piece of the city home with them’, with a wide range of handmade homeware and souvenirs in stock, inspired by Manchester’s cultural scene and made in the city.  

Products include greetings cards, prints, textiles, mugs, and the business’ signature ‘alphabet tiles’ – with each letter accompanied by a hand-drawn illustration of a part of Manchester’s heritage, from the Worker Bee to Stephenson’s Rocket and Factory Records.  

The Sculpts started trading as an online retailer in 2020, and opened its first bricks-and-mortar store in Sale just last year – but will now have the opportunity to reach millions of potential customers from across the planet as it opens its doors in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1. 

Having branched out from an online business to outdoor markets, The Sculpts opened a pop-up stand in John Lewis over Christmas in 2021 and 2022, and took up permanent residence at Altrincham Market. Some of Manchester’s best-loved cultural institutions now stock the company’s products in their gift shops, including Manchester City Art Gallery, John Rylands Library, the National Football Museum, and Whitworth Gallery.  

This year, The Sculpts are collaborating with MTV to create an exclusive design for more than 100 world-famous music artists performing at the Europe Music Awards, being held in Manchester in November. 

Despite the company’s impressive growth, it is sticking firmly to its roots – it designs its own original Manchester-inspired artwork, all its products are handmade in the city, rather than being outsourced to a mass producer, and all its small team of employees call the city home. 

The Sculpts joins a growing list of thriving Mancunian start-ups that have opened units at Manchester Airport, including Salford brewery Seven Bro7hers, coffee chain Pot Kettle Black and fast-food favourite Archie’s.  

Creating opportunities for local retailers is a key part of the airport’s strategy for improving its shopping and dining experience, giving passengers more choice and creating a distinctly Mancunian feel in its terminals.

Pasta Evangelists was founded by Genoa-born Alessandro Savelli in 2016 who was on a mission to bring his family’s cooking to a UK audience.

The brand continued to grow through their pasta making classes and home delivery range. Pasta Evangelists has since opened two branches; one in famous London department store Harrods and the other in upmarket West London suburb Richmond.  

Its third restaurant will open in Manchester Airport in the autumn and will, for the first time, introduce customers to the Pasta Evangelists’ Italian breakfast offering, which is set to be rolled out to other locations in the future. 

Among the selection of dishes will be ‘the Italian breakfast bowl,’ including grilled pancetta, Sicilian sausages, frittata, baked borlotti beans and mushrooms with a vegetarian option also on offer. 

Setting excited travellers off on their global journeys, the restaurant will also serve Pasta Evangelists’ luxury pasta sauces with each dish complemented by a fresh pasta shape, such as its ‘Carbonara of Dreams’ with spaghetti, beef ragù with mafaldine, wild mushroom rigatoni, pistachio, lemon and chilli pesto with lumace. 

Italian classics including Prosecco, Aperol Spritz and Birra Moretti lagers will be on offer, as well Italian coffees, tea and San Pellegrino soft drinks.

CAVU, founded by Manchester Airports Group (MAG) to revolutionise the airport passenger journey, has announced its latest innovative product: aether, an exclusive private terminal set to redefine the airport experience for all passengers.

aether has re-imagined the airport journey, offering an elevated product usually reserved for first and business class passengers - but now open to all travellers at Manchester Airport as a purchasable service.  

Positioned in a contemporary, self-contained, private space, completely away from the main airport terminal. aether elevates every sense of the airport journey, even the functional, including check-in, security and private parking.  Designed with meticulous attention to detail, aether boasts a curated menu, panoramic runway views, and dedicated staff attending to guests’ needs.

Passengers can relax and unwind, knowing that every aspect of their journey is taken care of, including a partnership with BMW who are supplying top of the range of models including the all-electric BMW i7, the seven-seater BMW X7 and their latest luxury performance BMW XM, providing a premium chauffeur-driven service across the airfield straight to the plane.

aether will launch in collaboration with Adam Reid, the award winning and renowned chef at Adam Reid at The French. The Manchester-born chef will create an elevated dining experience at aether, with a crafted menu designed to leave guests feeling refreshed and ready for their onward journey.

aether will offer reservations seven days a week with a limited capacity to ensure each and every guest has a truly elevated experience.

Starting from £90 per person and as part of a tiered offering, there are two packages to choose from.  ‘Express’ for those with just cabin bags, provides access to go straight through the Private Terminal and reach their gate with ease. ‘Inclusive’ for those with either cabin or checked bags can be used on either departure or arrival and allows guests to enjoy the full offering, including a curated menu, all food and drinks and even a private chauffer to their aircraft. Guests can also bring along non-travelling guests to enjoy the aether experience and wave them off before their flight, which is subject to availability and at an additional cost.

Reservations will open on Thursday, 6 June, for passengers to use the private terminal from Monday, 4 November 2024. However, guests can join the waitlist now and register here to be the first to access the reservations link which will be released on Monday, 3 June.

The announcement comes as Manchester Airport continues to break records – with soaring passenger numbers in each of the last six months. The airport continues to increase its range of destinations – which is now above 200 and is more than any airport outside London. The increase in visitors also coincided with an increase in passengers spending on premium experiences and lounges with bookings across Escape Lounges and 1903 Lounges growing by two thirds in recent years.

The Evergreen Bar & Brasserie will be operated by SSP UK, a leading operator of food and beverage outlets in travel locations, and combines stylish botanical décor with a menu inspired by local produce. It will be SSP’s first airside outlet in this terminal.

Named following a competition for Manchester Airport colleagues, the venue offers a premium pre-flight experience for departing passengers with a menu featuring artisan products from suppliers across the North.

Located in the departure lounge’s main atrium, The Evergreen Bar & Brasserie is an open and relaxed space for passengers to start their journeys. Whether looking for a hearty breakfast with freshly brewed coffee or a sharing board and glass of wine at the feature bar, there is something for everyone to enjoy throughout the day.

The opening of the 144-seat restaurant comes as the airport continues to make progress on its £1.3bn transformation programme, which will more than double the size of the existing Terminal 2 when it is completed next year.

“Terminal 2 is the centrepiece of our transformation programme and will be used by over 70 per cent of our passengers when it is complete, so we wanted to ensure we have a broad range of options for them to grab a bite to eat before they fly. This new restaurant offers something different to the existing offering in Terminal 2 while also supporting suppliers from across the North, and we are sure it will be a hit with our passengers.”

The phased reopening will start with the terminal being used for arriving passengers travelling with a select number of airlines.

Those flying with the airlines listed below will continue to check-in and go through security in Terminal One, but when they return back to Manchester, they will arrive into Terminal Three. While the two terminals are directly next to each other, passengers are advised to consider these changes when making drop-off, pick-up and parking arrangements.

Flybe will also fly into Terminal Three once the airline has resumed services from Manchester later in the year.

Those travelling over the coming weekend should also factor in extra time for their journey to the airport, due to closures on the M56, and the clocks changing on Sunday.

Passengers flying on or after 27^th March with British Airways, Iberia Express, Ryanair and Vueling will be asked to use the shops, restaurants and boarding gates within Terminal Three and will be directed to these areas once they have passed through Terminal One security – the two terminals are linked airside, with signage in place to direct passengers.

Those flying with these airlines who have bookings for the Terminal One Escape Lounge have been contacted to advise them of the changes, and invited to cancel and rebook from Terminal Three with a discount code.

Passengers with Aurigny, Eastern Airlines and Loganair will continue to use the Terminal One facilities for outbound journeys, and will only use Terminal Three when arriving into Manchester.

Food, drink and retail options open in Terminal Three will include:

Terminal Three Departure Lounge: Biza Duty Free, the Lion and Antelope, The Nook, Kiosco, Pork & Pickle, Costa Coffee, WH Smith, Boots.

Terminal Three Arrivals: Travelex and WH Smith.

Operating hours for each unit will vary, but there will always be food and drink provision for passengers travelling through at any time of day.

Covid-19 measures that are still in place across Terminal One and Terminal Two will also be applied in Terminal Three, including an enhanced cleaning regime.

To allow for the additional flight movements, the airport is set to reopen its second runway from Tuesday 5^th April. Initially it will operate for a limited number of hours each day and will gradually increase as the demand continues to rise. All local stakeholders will be made aware in advance of the reopening.

The remainder of Terminal Three, including the check-in hall and security, will be reopened at a later stage as the airport ramps up capacity in line with the recovery of passenger numbers, and passengers will be kept informed of any further changes.

“We are also aware many passengers won’t have flown for a long time so would always encourage them to prepare for their airport journey in advance, and to remind themselves of the rules around security and hand luggage.”

The Dutch and French flag carriers will not be the only new additions to the terminal this week, with Manchester-based Italian restaurant San Carlo opening its much-anticipated new venue in departures on Thursday.

And, with the traffic light system for travel due to be scrapped from next week, airport bosses are hoping to see more passengers return to the skies. Covid measures such as an enhanced cleaning regime will remain in place for the safety of staff and colleagues, however.

KLM and Air France make move to Terminal Two

KLM’s service to Amsterdam and Air France’s route to Paris (Charles de Gaulle) will be the latest in a long line to have migrated to Terminal Two since its opening in mid-July.

More than a dozen airlines are now operating from the terminal, from long-haul carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways to sunseekers’ favourites such as Jet2.com and TUI.

From this Tuesday (28^th September) passengers travelling with KLM and Air France should now use Terminal Two. Those with Manchester Airport car park or lounge bookings will have them moved across and customers will be notified accordingly.

With travel restrictions continuing to ease, further airlines are expected to move across to Terminal Two and these changes will be communicated appropriately. Passengers can also keep an eye on the airport’s social media channels for the latest advice, guidance and information.

Buongiorno to San Carlo and coffee favourite Pot Kettle Black

San Carlo, well known on the Manchester dining scene with several city centre venues, opens its very first airport location on Thursday (30^th September), quickly followed by coffee artisans Pot Kettle Black on Monday 4^th October, which has fast become a firm favourite with Mancunians.

They join an impressive array of Mancunian-inspired options in the new terminal, from trendy burger and shake chain Archie’s to local brewers Joseph Holt and Seven Bro7hers, which operate the Bridgewater Exchange and Amber Alehouse respectively.

Government Advice and Restrictions

In addition to checking the latest airport information, passengers are also advised to keep abreast of Government restrictions and advice. Although the system for international travel will be simplified from the start of next week, some rules will remain in place, and quarantine requirements may still apply if you are not double-vaccinated. Covid-19 safety measures and processes

Throughout the pandemic Manchester Airport has had a range of Covid-19 safety measures in place and will maintain these after October 4^th to ensure that we provide a safe environment for staff and passengers. These include Perspex screens and an enhanced cleaning regime, with 116 hand sanitising stations throughout the site provided by the airport’s sanitary partner Carex.

Additional cafes and retailers are also opening in Terminal Two as passenger footfall is forecast to increase over the summer.

Aegean Airlines moves in

The Terminal Two extension opened to the public on 14^th July with Jet2.com and TUI operating from there in the first week.

Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Brussels Airlines, airBaltic and Ethiopian Airlines have all now followed suit in moving their operations to the new terminal.

Greek carrier Aegean Airlines will become the ninth airline to operate from the ‘super-terminal’, offering services to Athens on a thrice-weekly basis beginning tomorrow (27^th July).

Passengers travelling with Aegean Airlines should now use Terminal Two. Those with Manchester Airport car park or lounge bookings will have them moved across and customers will be notified accordingly.

As summer progresses and international travel restrictions ease, further airlines will move across and they will be communicated appropriately. Passengers can also keep an eye on the airport’s social media channels for the latest advice, guidance and information.

Retail, Food and Drink

World Duty Free Express opened in Departures over the weekend, offering customers a quick and easy way to buy World Duty Free’s most popular products. The main World Duty Free unit, which has been operating since the new terminal opened its doors, remains available for those wishing to browse the full selection of the brand’s stock.

Those passing through Arrivals will also have additional choice in the near future, with Pret-a-Manger and Starbucks units due to open in early August.

The new terminal’s varied offering of bars, restaurants and shopping has been well-received by passengers thus far. Popular Manchester brands such as Archie’s and the Amber Alehouse, in partnership with Seven Bro7hers, are complemented by well-known high street names including M&S and Costa Coffee.

All flights to operate from Terminal One

In response to a ban on international travel that forms part of the Government’s current lockdown measures, Manchester Airport is preparing for a significant decrease in customers over the coming weeks.

With this in mind, and to ensure the best experience for those still flying, the northern hub has taken the decision to operate all flights from Terminal One only from Wednesday 11 November, until further notice. Terminal Three will close on this date, and Terminal Two (which has been closed since September 2) will remain shut.

From this date, all passengers will depart and arrive from this terminal and should not use Terminals Two and Three. Passengers returning to Manchester after this date whose vehicles are parked in the Terminal Three Multi Storey Car Park will be contacted to advise them of this change.

Government advice on foreign travel

UK Government guidance states that if you live in England, you cannot travel overseas or within the UK between Thursday 5 November and Wednesday 2 December, unless for work, education or other legally permitted reasons, and you should look to reduce the number of journeys you make. For those planning to travel into England, you should check the current travel corridor list to see whether you need to isolate for 14 days.

The UK Government continues to advise against all but essential foreign travel and ignoring this guidance may invalidate travellers’ insurance policies.

As a result of the lockdown, we expect that a number of airlines will scale back or cancel services during this period. Refunds for cancelled flights are subject to the policy of the airline.

Passengers are advised to contact their airline if they have any queries regarding service availability. They are also encouraged to thoroughly read all guidance relating to coronavirus from both the UK government and the authorities in their destination before travelling.

Retail

Due to the Government rules, most of the airport’s retail outlets will also close during the lockdown. Only the following shops will remain open;

Terminal One: Pret, Greggs, Boots, Spar (Landside); Pret, Boots, WHSmith (Airside)

Terminal Three (until Tuesday 10 November): Boots, WHSmith, Costa Coffee

Passengers may bring their own food with them, as long as it meets the security requirements around liquids, gels and paste, and are also reminded of the free water fountains available in the terminal, where empty bottles can be filled up.

Parking

Both the Terminal One and Terminal Three Multi-Storey Car Parks remain open.

Our Drop & Go service will be put on hold from Wednesday 11 November, and we are not accepting any new bookings.

Those who have a Drop & Go booking on or after Wednesday 11 November will have their booking transferred automatically to the Terminal Three Multi Storey car park, which is a short walk from Terminal One, and will be contacted to advise them of this change.

Passengers who have booked parking through the airport directly and who have purchased cancellation protection can cancel their booking for free, up to four hours before it is due to start. Those without cancellation protection, can cancel up to 72 hours before their booking is due to start. In both scenarios, the customer will not be entitled to a refund if their booking is cancelled with less than four hours’ notice or if the start time has already passed, so it is vitally important that they remember to cancel any car park bookings they have made, if they no longer require them.

Customers who have booked directly with MAG and wish to amend their booking can do so online here or by contacting the Sales Team (lines are open Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00).

Those who have booked parking through a third party and wish to amend or cancel their booking should contact their booking agent. This includes Ryanair.

Guidance for those picking up / dropping off passengers

In order to best enable social distancing and to avoid crowding, people collecting passengers are asked to wait for them in their cars, rather than coming into the terminal to greet them.

The free drop-off point, next to the JetParks 1 car park, will remain available to use.

Upon arrival, they will need to show either a print-out of the form or have it on their phone. Some bars, restaurants and retailers have also changed their opening hours and practices, in line with new guidance issued by government.

Retail Offering

Following the introduction of new government guidance last week on the sale of food and beverages, bars and restaurants and some retail units on our side are now required to close between 10pm and 5am. Food is available from WHSmiths and Boots during these hours, however, unfortunately this will not include hot food, hot drinks or alcohol.

All required units are now displaying the NHS Track and Trace App posters, offering guests a quick and easy way to use the service. As this is mandatory under government regulations, all units will request guests to scan the NHS poster or use their own track and trace App/service.

Free water fountains remain available in Terminals One and Three to fill up empty bottles.

In the past week, Denmark, Iceland, Curaçao and Slovakia have been removed from the travel corridors list.

Passengers should be aware that they will now need to quarantine on return to the UK if travelling to destinations removed from the travel corridors list. Flights:

Seven countries were removed from the UK Government’s ‘travel corridors’ list late last Thursday, including France, Malta and the Netherlands.

Passengers should be aware that they will now need to quarantine on return to the UK if travelling to destinations removed from the travel corridors list. They are reminded to check the latest Government guidance on travel corridors and requirements upon returning to the UK: www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-travel-corridors

Some carriers might cancel services to destinations that are removed from the list, so passengers should check with their airline if they have any specific flight enquiries.

The Northern Hub is on the hunt for couples flying through the airport on February 14^th and will be offering one pair of lovebirds the chance to still have a Valentine’s Day date inside its terminals.

A lucky pair will then be picked and be given the VIP treatment as part of their Valentine’s Day date. • ‘Daily Deals’ give shoppers the chance to secure a bargain each day in the week leading up to Black Friday

Visitors to Manchester Airport, and its website, will be able to take advantage of cut-price deals on and around this Black Friday, 29^th November, as the airport launches its largest-ever sale.

The offers available will encompass retailers, including well-known brands Dixons Travel and Biza Tax & Duty Free, as well as airport services such as car parking, lounges and Airportr luggage check-in.

Dixons Travel has unveiled a range of deals at its Terminal 1, 2 and 3 units, running until Monday 2^nd December. These include offers on speakers, cameras and smartphones, with buyers able to make big savings compared to the High Street and other online retailers. The full range of offers is viewable online via Manchester Airport’s Click & Collect service, with discounts also available in-store dependent on stock.

In addition, Manchester Airport is presenting a series of online ‘Daily Deals’ in the week leading up to Black Friday, giving customers a chance to secure discounts of up to 30 per cent on car parking, 50 per cent on FastTrack Security and Passport Control passes, 30 per cent on bookings at the new PremiAir private terminal, and 40 per cent on lounge bookings.

Black Friday itself will see a variety of limited-time-only ‘Crazy Hour’ reductions online, including 50 per cent off PremiAir bookings, 50 per cent off car parking, and 30 per cent off Airportr collections. The timings for these deals will not be preannounced, which means travellers will need to be eagle-eyed on the Manchester Airport website to secure the best rates.

Alongside the Crazy Hour offers, Airportr is giving 25 per cent off to those who make a booking on Friday 22 November and have their luggage collected before Black Friday.

Over Black Friday Weekend, from 29^th November to 1^st December, Biza Tax & Duty Free will also offer 20 per cent reductions on Click & Collect orders. Shoppers can take advantage of the special rates via Manchester Airport’s Click & Collect service, which allows customers to pre-order products and collect when they pass through the airport.

Manchester Airport today gave passengers a flavour of the future, as it revealed the first wave of food and drink outlets that will feature in the new “super terminal” being built as part of its £1bn transformation.

The list includes a number of iconic brands born-and-bred in the region, as well as a series of popular chains moving into the UK’s third largest airport for the first time.

One of the stalwarts of Manchester’s dining scene – the San Carlo Group – will open its first ever airport venue, with the launch of San Carlo Cicchetti in the extended Terminal Two.

San Carlo operates some of the highest profile restaurants outside of London, with four eateries in Manchester. It has run a Cicchetti within the House of Fraser store, still affectionately known as Kendals, since 2011.

The new departure terminal – set to more than double in size through the largest investment in Manchester Airport’s 81-year history - will also feature The Apiary and Daisy Nook.

The Apiary will offer stunning airfield views and a sustainably sourced British menu and botanical cocktails. The luxury artisan bar and eatery offers delicious breakfasts as well as lunch and dinner menus centred around fantastically exotic and exquisite seasonal flavours.

Meanwhile, Daisy Nook will offer all day dining with a menu focused on healthy and lighter dishes.

There will also be some familiar names for those looking for a grab-and-go option. Manchester favourites Archie’s and Barburrito will have space in the new departure lounge.

Archie’s has been giving Mancunians a taste of America for more than a decade with its burgers, shakes and waffles. It opened its first store on Oxford Road and now has further two in Manchester with outposts in Birmingham and Liverpool.

Barburrito has grown rapidly since it opened its first outlet in Piccadilly Gardens back in 2005. It now has four branches in the city, as well as outlets in Leeds, London, and Sheffield.

Those looking for a coffee hit can enjoy two Mancunian institutions in Grindsmith and Pot Kettle Black. Grindsmith, which was established by local duo Luke Tomlinson and Pete Gibson in 2014 will be located in the arrivals hall.

Pot Kettle Black will offer a brunch and coffee house in the departure lounge. Rugby League players Jon Wilkin and Mark Flanagan set up the business in 2015 and it has outlets in Barton Arcade and Spinningfields.

Two new drinks venues will also open. The Bridgewater Exchange, in partnership with Joseph Holt’s will feature its very own microbrewery, brewing a beer that is unique to Manchester Airport. It will also serve breakfasts, small plates and pub classics.

There is also the Amber Alehouse, in partnership with Seven Bro7hers brewery, which hails from Salford and has risen in popularity in recent years. It has outlets in Salford and Ancoats, with its beer sold at other venues across the region.

The Amber Alehouse will be a modern industrial gastropub focusing on a variety of local craft beers, cask ales and small-batch lagers. The beers are paired with bar food classics with attention given to shared portions and healthy options. All bars offer a full range of low alcohol and alcohol-free drinks.

The airport has revealed the first 15 venues that will open in the new terminal in 2020, with the roster also including a series of popular national chains.

Wagamama, M&S Simply Food, M&S Food to Go, Wrapchic, an Indian and Mexican fusion street food outlet, and Vit, a healthy, all-day fresh juice and food bar will also have a presence at Manchester Airport for the first time.

Alongside those will be passenger favourites such as KFC.

The outlets are being brought forward on a mixture of franchise basis by HMS Host, SSP and TRG and some on a direct basis.

A further eight will open in 2022 when the existing Terminal Two reopens after being refurbished. The second phase includes plans for ‘food hall’ style street food stalls.

Details will be released in due course around the new retail outlets and lounges that will open as part of the transformation programme.

The outlets are being brought forward through a mixture of franchise and direct agreements. The franchises are being delivered by HMS Host, SSP and TRG.

The UK’s third largest airport has signed up to a scheme called Refill, a national City to Sea initiative backed by local water company, United Utilities.

It means passengers can refill their water bottles at any of the 33 outlets across the airport’s three terminals. This is in addition to water fountains that are already located in both arrivals and the departure lounges.

With 7.7 billion plastic water bottles bought across the UK each year, the scheme aims to reduce the amount of single use plastic waste.

Mike Ward, Head of Retail at Manchester Airport, said: “As the airport gears up for its busiest ever summer we know that many passengers are now travelling through with their own water bottles. This scheme will make it even easier for them to fill up and ensure they’re staying hydrated for their flights.”

Sarah Irving, Refill Regional Coordinator said: “Rolling out Refill in Manchester Airport is really going to help the campaign for reusables to take off, with many travellers opting to take their own bottles and cups when travelling. The aim of the campaign is to normalise using a reusable bottle so the support from such highly populated places like airports is a great way to get more people on board, making it easier to reuse on the go whether at home or abroad.”

The lounges have had a refresh, with new colour schemes, menu designs and locally-inspired artwork.

The new food and beverage options, which will now be handled for the first time by in house MAG staff at every lounge, are fully ‘all inclusive’. Items that used to be paid upgrade options, including hot breakfasts, premium beers and spirits, and hot meat and vegetarian main dishes, are now available for the single-entry price. This includes Veuve Valmante sparkling wine and Manchester Pale Ale, supported by a local partnership with independent Manchester brewery JW Lees.

Whatever time of the day guests visit the lounges, they will find the buffet packed with a range of delicious dishes – all freshly prepared daily on site. Passengers can enjoy a selection of breakfast favourites including pastries, cereals, fresh fruit and hot items. Those joining for brunch or lunch can discover a range of hot buffet options such as pastries, spiced chicken and curries, as well as favourites such as mac n cheese, cottage pie and the soup of the day - served alongside cold buffet salads. All colleagues who worked in the Escape Lounge food and beverage operation for Delaware North Company have been given the opportunity to transfer across to become MAG employees.

The ‘We are changing’ campaign comes after construction work on Terminal Two started this summer at the UK’s third largest airport.

The transformation programme will see Terminal Two more than double in size creating 60 new units in over 167,000sqft of retail space. With more than 27 million passengers and continued growth, the airport is looking to fill the space with a range of new Food & Beverage and retail outlets.

As well as high street retailers, the airport is keen to have a wide range of independent and local brands. With retail units to suit all sizes, a new market area is also proposed for pop-up food stalls and smaller independent F&B outlets.

Two industry events will be held in Manchester in November. One will be held for existing retail partners on the 14^th November whilst on the 21^st November the airport is inviting interested retailers to meet the team and find out more about the exciting opportunities the development will offer. Manchester Airport is giving the people of Birmingham the chance to win a luxury holiday as it opens up its first ever pop up shop in the Great Western Arcade.

Situated in the Great Western Arcade the shop opens on Wednesday 14^th June and will house interactive travel themed games where shoppers can also win a host of spot prizes.

The pop up shop is coming to Birmingham to showcase a wealth of Manchester Airport’s USA routes, which currently in the UK can only also be found at London airports. These include: San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston.
