Government commitment to Northern infrastructure and growth corridor is a "positive first step in the right direction"
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer today announced a package of investment that will improve Northern transport infrastructure - including plans to make the Liverpool-Hull corridor an economic superpower and funding to improve the key rail line connecting Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
Manchester Airport Managing Director Chris Woodroofe has welcomed the plans but said that to truly help the region reach its potential they need to be followed by “transformational levels of investment in the infrastructure the region needs” - including a new Liverpool - Manchester rail line.

“Government is right to acknowledge the economic potential of the North and the contribution it can make to its overall growth mission.
“For decades, public and private sector leaders have been united in their view that better connecting the North with itself, and with the world, is key to unlocking that potential.
“That is why today’s announcement is a positive first step in the right direction, as is Government’s vision for a Northern growth corridor.
"It is vital that is followed by a firm commitment to transformational levels of investment in the infrastructure the region needs to reach its full potential, including a new Liverpool-Manchester rail line.
“We look forward to working with Ministers and local leaders on plans to create a super-connected and globally competitive North, with Manchester Airport at its heart."
