Students have the chance to be played on the radio with Junior Apprentice competition

Manchester Airport’s Junior Apprentice competition is returning for 2018 and Year Six pupils from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire are being encouraged to take part and get creative, with winning students getting the chance to hear themselves on the airwaves.

The competition will see students create a marketing campaign based on the theme of ‘Safety in the Sun’, comprising of a unique radio advert and an informative poster to promote the campaign. They’ll also give a presentation to a panel of business professionals about how they created their campaign.

The winning students have the exciting opportunity to professionally record their radio advert professionally in Heart Radio’s Manchester studio, and hear it played on air. The winning ‘Safety in the Sun’ poster will also be displayed across Manchester Airport’s three terminals during the summer season.

Teachers will be provided with a specialist pack to support students with the competition, including lesson plans, supportive videos from business professionals and a mentor for the team.

The mentors will be comprised of senior managers from Manchester Airport and its service partners who will act as dedicated personal advisors for the teams. They will support students with their marketing campaign and presentations, challenging the students and encouraging them to succeed.

As well as being on the radio and having their campaign displayed in the airport, the winners will win their whole school a day with circus sensible and their big top tent on their school field. All children in the school will watch a performance and learn circus skills.

The winners will also receive a trophy to take back to school and show with pride to their classmates whilst all pupils entering the competition will be presented with a certificate and medal, with second and third place winning a visit from an ice cream van.

Wendy Sinfield, Community Relations Manager at Manchester Airport, said: “We’re thrilled to be running this competition after last year’s was such a huge success. We saw lots of creativity and it was fantastic to see the students work so well as a team, building their confidence, communication, and problem solving skills.”

All year six pupils are encouraged to get involved, working in teams of 6, with one team from each school then submitting a design. Class teachers will be asked to shortlist one campaign to represent the school.
